Orlando Magic will struggle MIGHTILY without Dwight Howard

The Sports Bank will be counting down to the opening tip of the 2012-13 NBA season with team by team previews starting with the worst and working our way to the title contenders.  There is no lockout this time around so let’s get going.

Dwight Howard had his wish granted and was freed from the Orlando Magic.  As a result, the Magic become one of the worst teams in the league as their post-Howard makeover will be quite painful.  (By the way, if you are keeping track at home I have the three worst teams in the Eastern Conference coming from the Southeast Division.)

Washington Wizards: 2012-13 NBA Season Preview

The Sports Bank will be counting down to the opening tip of the 2012-13 NBA season with team by team previews starting with the worst and working our way to the title contenders.  There is no lockout this time around so let’s get going.

The Washington Wizards training camp began with a sour taste as news came out that John Wall suffered a minor setback to his knee injury and could miss the first month of the regular season.  That is not the start that a franchise which has suffered through four straight brutally bad years was hoping to hear as they try to turn the corner and inch towards becoming a playoff contender.

Charlotte Bobcats: 2012-13 NBA Season Preview

The Sports Bank will be counting down to the opening tip of the 2012-13 NBA season with team by team previews starting with the worst and working our way to the title contenders.  There is no lockout this time around so let’s get going.

After finishing with the worst winning percentage in NBA history, the Charlotte Bobcats have nowhere to go but up.  Their rise won’t be rapid but owner Michael Jordan made a couple of minor moves that should make the ‘Cats slightly more competitive this season although not likely enough to get them out of the cellar of the Eastern Conference.

NBA Western Conference Predictions

While the Eastern Conference seems to be a two or three team race, the Western Conference is pretty wide open as six or seven teams have a realistic chance of advancing to the NBA Finals.  Here are my Western Conference predictions.

Durant, Thunder Among NBA’s Best

oklahoma city thunder

Do you think Sam Presti sends fruit baskets to the Portland Trail Blazers franchise on a weekly basis as a “thank you” for them passing on Kevin Durant and having him fall right into the Oklahoma City Thunder’s lap?  OKC is rising up the ranks of the NBA and a sexy pick to de-throne the Lakers in the Western Conference.  As long as they have Durant and an improving supporting cast, it is not a crazy thought.

Will the Chicago Bulls be a Factor when Boozer Returns?

carlos boozer bulls

Chicago Bulls fans and management were hoping to start a new era of basketball by teaming their young superstar Derrick Rose with LeBron, Bosh, or the hometown boy, Dwyane Wade.  Instead, Chicago settled for Plan B or more likely Plan E.  Still, they should rise from mediocrity to one of the better teams in the NBA Eastern Conference this season.

Is Time Running Out on the San Antonio Spurs?

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs dynasty just continues to chug along.  However, it appears as if the train seems to be run losing fuel.  Their nucleus of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli, and Tony Parker is starting to get up their age but if that core is healthy during the post-season, the Spurs are more than capable of once again making a run in the NBA Western Conference.

Dallas Mavericks Defined by Playoff Failures

mark cuban mavs

Stop me if you have heard this before; the Dallas Mavericks finish with a great regular season record only to get ousted from the NBA playoffs in the first round.  It has happened in three of the past four years including last season when the Mavs finished with the second best record in the Western Conference.  Will that lack of post-season success change this year?

Portland Trail Blazers Need to Get Over Hump

brandon roy blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers are off to a 2-0 start this season.  They once again figure to be fighting for a middle of the pack Western Conference playoff team.  The challenge now is to get the monkey off their back by winning a post-season series; something they have not been able to do in more than a decade.

Orlando Magic Look to Keep Pace in Eastern Conference

Dwight Howard Magic

While that other Florida NBA franchise was making a commotion this off-season, forever changing the landscape of the league, the Orlando Magic quietly sat back and avoided making any panic moves.  And why should they have?  Orlando has established themselves as one of the elite teams in the league.  But do they have what it takes to beat out the Heat and Celtics in the Eastern Conference?

Milwaukee Bucks Won’t Sneak Up On Anybody This Year

Bucks Fear the Deer

Last year, I picked the Milwaukee Bucks to finish in last place in the Eastern Conference.  Whoops.  Instead, Scott Skiles did one of the best coaching jobs in the league, Brandon Jennings was ten times better than anyone imagined, and the Bucks were one of the surprise teams in the NBA.

In the process, basketball was rejuvenated in Milwaukee.  With a few off-season acquisitions, the Bucks are hoping they can keep the momentum going and that the league will once again Fear the Deer.
