Can Memphis’ Will Barton sneak into 1st round of 2012 NBA Draft?

will barton nba draft

A breakout sophomore season in which he averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds per game, Memphis Tigers‘ shooting guard/small forward Will Barton earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors.  As a result, the Baltimore native decided to leave school early and enter the 2012 NBA Draft.  Even with those accolades, he remains a borderline first round pick.

Did Baylor’s Quincy Miller make a mistake by entering NBA Draft?

quincy miller nba draft

After initially announcing his intention to return to Baylor for his sophomore season, Quincy Miller had a change of heart and declared for the 2012 NBA Draft.  “At first, I was listening to everybody else’s opinion instead my own,” Miller admitted at the NBA Draft Combine.  “Ever since I was younger, I just wanted to play in the NBA so I was like I might as well go follow my dreams.”

Xavier Musketeers PG Tu Holloway headed to NBA? (combine video)

tu-holloway-xavier

Xavier Musketeers point guard Tu Holloway benefits this June from being in a very weak point guard draft class. He’s not a blue-chip prospect, but he’s better than much of the competition. What works against him is his height. His lack of size turns off some NBA scouts. Holloway made the cut for the combine, and met the media yesterday.

How’s the process going for him? Watch after the jump

NBA Combine in Chicago: Anthony Davis unites local and national interest

anthony davis kentucky

With the NBA Draft Combine rolling through Chicago this week, you probably saw a ton  of very tall young men strolling down Michigan Avenue. Or at least more near-seven-footers than usual; especially on the Magnificent Mile, where the draft combine’s media activities were held.

No doubt the star of this year’s session is Anthony Davis, the Chicago product who dominated for the national champion Kentucky Wildcats. The man with the unibrow took home all the major individual college basketball awards, and will soon go #1 overall to the New Orleans Hornets.

Marquette’s Jimmy Butler Joins the Chicago Bulls

jimmy butler

Marquette small forward Jimmy Butler was one of 54 players invited to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago last month.  He’ll soon be heading back down I-94 again, this time as a member of the Chicago Bulls . GM Gar Forman selected him with the 30th (last) pick in the first round of the draft last night. Forman talked with the media after the draft about Butler, and said he envisions him playing some two in addition to the three.

Chicago’s GM said that Butler was exactly who they wanted, and was shocked that he was available at that position. It’s pretty obvious that Chicago is in dire need of a shooting guard, and outside shooting in general, which is not Butler’s strengths. But then again, after Klay Thompson, there were real legit SG prospects in this draft. Butler said hes working on his shot though.

And he has something else that fits in well with the Bulls- defense.

Is Arizona’s Derrick Williams a Power Forward or Small Forward in the NBA?

derrick williams nba draft

Other than Marquette and Wisconsin, I have watched more Arizona Wildcat games in the past two seasons than any other team.  (And remember, I have watched more than 900 college basketball games in the past three years.)  Seeing Derrick Williams‘ meteoric rise on NBA Draft boards during that time has been rather remarkable.  And now, barring a crazy trade or some dumb David Kahn decision, Williams will be one of the top two picks in Thursday’s 2011 NBA Draft.

Duke’s Kyrie Irving, #1 Overall Pick? (NBA Draft Combine Video)

kyrie irving nba

There seems to be a consensus #1 regarding the 2011 NBA Draft- Duke’s franchise building point guard Kyrie Irving. Although, the Cleveland Cavaliers do have some strength at the position, so they may consider Arizona’s Derrick Williams at the #1 spot. Irving probably will go #1 despite playing in just 8 college basketball games, but if the Cavs don’t take him, I’m sure the Minnesota Timberwolves will at #2.

Here is Irving discussing numerous topics at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. Lots of media around him, and many draft issues are touched upon.

Kentucky’s DeAndre Liggins Made Right Decision in Entering NBA Draft

deandre liggins kentucky

Every year I scratch my head at several underclassmen who decide to leave school and enter the NBA Draft early; and this year was no different.  Most people felt that way about DeAndre Liggins‘ decision to leave Kentucky after his junior season.  However, when you at Liggins’ situation with his personal life and how things likely would have shaped up on-the-court at Lexington next season, his choice to turn pro makes sense even though there is a real possibility he will not get drafted on June 23rd.

Is Kentucky’s Brandon Knight Really Worth 3rd Pick in NBA Draft?

brandon knight

It has been well publicized that the 2011 NBA Draft is bad; historically bad like Dana Carvey’s movie Master of Disguise.  And while Kentucky freshman point guard Brandon Knight had a great freshman season, it is hard to hard to believe that he is worthy of being the third overall pick by the Utah Jazz like many mock drafts are projecting.

Josh Selby Putting Kansas Behind Him; Focusing On NBA Draft

josh selby

To say Josh Selby had a roller coaster freshman season at Kansas would be like saying Jennifer Lopez has an okay body; a gross understatement.  Still, the Jayhawks combo guard chose to leave Lawrence after one season and embark a NBA career that is filled with more question marks than the Riddler‘s costume.  As the NBA Draft draws near, Selby is ready to put his brief collegiate career in the rear view mirror.

Providence’s Marshon Brooks Soaring Up NBA Draft Boards

Marshon Brooks

He was second in the nation in scoring which is a quite the feat considering Providence‘s Marshon Brooks played in the Big East; arguably the nation’s toughest conference.  However not until recently has Brooks began to emerge as a true first round prospect in the 2011 NBA Draft.  After a solid showing at the NBA Draft Combine,  Brooks’ stock is on the rise.  I had a chance to talk with Brooks at the combine and he had some interesting comments about his time at Providence, playing for a bad team, and even dissed on ESPN’s draft “expert” Chad Ford a bit.
