Cubs draft manager Dale Sveum’s kid

sveum

In this job market, nepotism rules. Yesterday the Chicago Cubs selected third baseman Rustin Sveum, son of Cubs manager Dale Sveum, in the 39th round (1,184th) out of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. Hey, it’s not what you know, but who you know right?

Last year, the Cubs drafted Shawon Dunston Jr. so again it was “family business.”

Chicago White Sox take Courtney Hawkins in 2012 MLB Draft

diamond-sock

The Chicago White Sox have taken a player from the collegiate ranks in the first round in each of the last nine drafts. 2009’s 23rd overall pick Jared Mitchell joins starting pitcher Chris Sale (2010, 13th overall), outfielder Keenyn Walker (2011, 47th overall), infielder Gordon Beckham (2008, eighth overall) Aaron Poreda (2007, 25th), Kyle McCulloch (2006, 30th) and Lance Broadway (2005, 15th) as the Sox last seven first-round picks.

Beckham is the team’s everyday second baseman and Sale is arguably the team’s best starting pitcher, so as you can see this strategy is working. Chicago Cubs find next savior in 1st round pick Albert Almora

albert-almora

The Chicago Cubs will probably lose 105+ games this season, so tonight was pretty much their Super Bowl. It’s the first MLB draft of the Theo Epstein- Jed Hoyer regime, so it’s a big night for Cubs fans and the long term view. With over a century on ineptitude, Cub fans are always obsessed with the next savior, the next big thing to come along and turn it around.

Anthony Rizzo has that title now, but in the past the heavy crown has been worn by: Shawon Dunston, Corey Patterson, Felix Pie, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Ty Griffin, Mike Harkey, Lance Dickson, Gary Scott and many more “can’t miss” prospects who ultimately missed.

The next home-grown super-prospect is……5 tool player Albert Almora.

Houston Astros make Carlos Correa #1 overall MLB Draft pick

astros

For the third time in their history, the Houston Astros had the #1 pick in MLB entry draft. In 1976 they took future White Sox starting hurler Floyd Bannister, and in 1992 they took valuable baseball card but far from franchise player Phil Nevin. Tonight they took Puerto Rican shortstop Carlos Correa with the #1 overall pick in the march towards getting the state of Texas its first World Series winner.

The Astros were the first of the two teams to reach it, but the Texas Rangers have come much closer, losing the last two years. With 56 wins last year, the Astros have nowhere to go but up. And Correa will perhaps be their shortstop in their future AL West days.
