Michigan State’s Branden Dawson punches Purdue’s Travis Carroll: VIDEO
During the Michigan State Spartans utter destruction of the Purdue Boilermakers today, you might have noticed a little punch thrown by State forward Branden Dawson on Purdue’s Travis Carroll. Tom Izzo coached players do not act like this; McDonald’s All-Americans do not like act like this. Watch the video to see the act for yourself. Of course, the Spartans deny it. Deny deny deny:

Michigan State sports information director Matt Larson sent the following in an email to the BTN:
“The angle of Branden Dawson that BTN had during the broadcast certainly makes it look like there might have been a punch. However, I’ve viewed an angle from underneath the basket and that does not appear to be the case.”

Maybe I was wrong to doubt Michigan State Spartans QB Kirk Cousins? Back in the summer, I believed the Spartans would be the 4th best team in the Big Ten. I was dazzled by the sexy new college football newcomer to the conference, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and their vaunted blackshirt defense.
I was wrong. I did pick State to win at Michigan, but I did not see last week’s upset coming. And Cousins maybe even knows that I was wrong too. You see, he reads your criticism and uses it to fuel the team to reach greater heights.
Maybe I still have time to come correct.

This comes to me from a Detroit area man, and sports fan, who’s enduring a professional setback, and some personal financial uncertainty right now. Yes, you might have heard a thing or two in the news about the city of Detroit and its economic hardships. Now you’re hearing about their athletic successes as well.
Well the media often likes to present those two situations together, often into being something they’re not.
We’re here to tell you what really happens when sports triumph hits an economically depressed city. Here’s our piece from Detroit Sports Fan:

Bloomberg News reported that the success of Detroit sports would inject another $140 million into the economy. As the Detroit Red Wings get started, the motor city’s most famous and successful sports brand complements the Lions winning ways (4-0, one of just two undefeated teams left in the NFL), the Detroit Tigers winning the AL Central and leading the New York Yankees in the ALDS 2-1.
And then you have the #11 Michigan Wolverines who are 5-0 and just down the road in Ann Arbor. Sure the Pistons are still a complete train wreck, but the NBA is on lockout, so we won’t really see that.

This year in East Lansing, it’s all about “P4RB” meaning “Prepare for Rose Bowl” for the Michigan State Spartans. It’s a slogan you’ll find displayed on t-shirts within the program. It originated during a presentation during a winter meeting. The presentation was made by Running Backs Coach Mike Salem’s brother Wade.
“At the end of his talk, he brought up a slide that said P4RB, and his point was as we go through our winter workouts, spring practices, summer workouts and training camp, we’re not just going out to practice, or run around. We’re doing it to prepare for a Rose Bowl. And that perspective has really helped to galvanize and strengthen our workouts,” said MSU QB Kirk Cousins at Media Day.
“And the focus is not on the Rose Bowl, the focus is on the preparation and the process. And making sure we’re doing what we can towards the things we can control,” he continued.

At the annual Big Ten football kick-off luncheon, Michigan State QB Kirk Cousins gave a speech that elicited a standing ovation. Of all the players and coaches who spoke, it was only the words of the Spartans leader who inspired such a reaction. The video is after the jump (h/t to The Only Colors, SB Nation’s State blog)
Earlier that morning, when he spoke to rotating journalists at the conference media days, Cousins again stood out as one of the best public speakers. He said that he instructs his brother to find everything he can written about them, especially all the negative press and he shows it to the team for motivation. Read more about that here.
Listen to the intro by BTN’s Dave Revsine, Cousins is one of those people who are perfect- on paper.

“I’ll always feel overlooked, I’m always looking for motivation. I just told my brother the other day: I said Kyle, go on the internet and look up every article you can. Go find every preseason magazine you can, and compile a list, of all the quotes, articles, anything that disrespects us, or doesn’t give us our due,” Cousins told the media.
