miami-college-basketball

College basketball teams are experiencing more year-by-year turnover than ever before due to: graduation, players leaving early for the NBA Draft, and transfers galore;   Here are five teams who made the 2013 NCAA Tournament this season but will likely take a step back next year and have their work cut out for them if they want to return to the Big Dance.

#35 Miami Hurricanes: College Basketball 111 in 111

miami cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

There have to be some bold predictions in my rankings or else I’d be boring.  One of those is that the Miami Hurricanes will have a firm grip on being the fourth best team in the ACC since six of their top seven scorers are back from last season.

#48 Miami Hurricanes: College Football 77 in 77

For the Miami Hurricanes it’s not all about the U. It’s all about the NCAA sanctions; which will be forthcoming. Last year’s shadiness and malfeasance was reminiscent of the 1980s and 1990s corruption. The Canes know how to “pay to play.” But unfortunately, it will keep them from prominence for awhile

Miami Hurricanes Famous NFL TD Streak Over at 149

miami hurricanes cheerleader

Something happened this week in the NFL that hasn’t happened in 149 weeks- no former Miami Hurricanes scored a touchdown. Yes, think about what an amazing streak that is. To quote Miami Sound Machine and Gloria Estefan “1, 2, 3….I’m just going to keep on counting...”

The big boy Vince Wilfork from the New England Patriots was the last home on Monday night was the final hope, but there was no pick-six or forced fumble.

Notre Dame Football and Brian Kelly: How does this story end?

Notre Dame Stadium

Halfway through his second season at the pressure-packed helm of Notre Dame football, Brian Kelly has experienced horrible tragedy and made almost every mistake imaginable.

From the death of Declan Sullivan to horrible public admission that the players he recruited were on a different level than those he inherited, Kelly has done a lot in creating the minefield he has to navigate daily.

After finishing last season with a four-game winning streak and a lopsided bowl victory over one-time-rival Miami in the Sun Bowl, a lot was expected of the 2011 Fighting Irish.

#56 Miami Hurricanes: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Poor Jim Larranaga.  He left a stable George Mason (no, not the former director of CTU) program to walk into a potential mess with the Miami Hurricanes.  Meanwhile, Frank Haith bolted The U at the perfect time, right before the storm hit and scandal rocked the University’s athletic department.  Add in serious injuries to a pair of big men and Larranaga will have his hands full this season with the ‘Canes.

#22 Miami Hurricanes: College Football 77 in 77

“I heard the rain storms ain’t nothing to mess with, but I can’t feel a drip on the strip.” Yes we’ve come to the Miami Hurricanes, and you what that means, the obligatory cliche reference to 1.) the cheesy Will Smith song and 2.) the greatest ESPN “30 for 30” ever, “The U. It’s all about the U.”

Really, I’m sure all you Canes fans will agree that movie was AWESOME!

Ok enough bread and circuses, let’s talk COLLEGE FOOTBALL! I’m taking my analysis to South Beach for this installment of the 77 in 77 (oh, c’mon you didn’t think you’d escape without the infamous Lebron James platitude, did you?)

Notre Dame vs. Miami in a Bowl game! Only 20 years late

theo riddick kickoff return notre dame

“Save Jimmy Johnson’s ass for me.”

This quote is one of the more revered utterances in Notre Dame sports legend.

Lou Holtz allegedly said this to his team after a pre-game brawl between Notre Dame and Miami in a famous 1988 tilt featuring the No. 1 Hurricanes and No. 2 Irish.

It was obvious that both teams didn’t like each other. And that is putting it nicely.

The Notre Dame/Miami rivalry was a heated match-up for years in the late-80’s and early-90’s, and then poof … it was gone. And gone with it were the powerhouse traditions of these two universities.

Miami got itself back on the radar with its National Championship following the 2001 season, but it has been a mess since then, and now they are searching for a new coach.

Take It To the Bank — College Football Saturday!

It’s been a long couple weeks.

I didn’t do so good for most of ya a couple weeks ago.  I had to go into hiding.

You don’t believe me? Here’s an email our esteemed Mr. Banks got:

Dear Louie:
I cannot believe that a simp like you who lives in Vegas went only 1-4 or 2-4, depending how you look at your parlay win. What a joke.  And you get paid for this? And people follow your advice?? It’s terrible!  A blind, one-nut monkey could do better than you. A blind one-nut monkey probably HAS done better than you.

Sincerely,
A concerned citizen

Well, Mr. Concerned Citizen, let me tell you something: I’ve got both balls, but I had to have my prostate removed back in ’77 after a long weekend with Cybil Shepherd. Not that that has anything to do with anything, I’m just saying.

And this week, this is what you’ll all be saying: How are you so lucky, Louie?? [Read more…]

Showdown Letdown: OSU Report and Review

As sequels often do, last Saturday’s showdown between the Miami Hurricanes and the Ohio State Buckeyes failed to live up to the promise of the original—the original, of course, being the two team’s classic 2003 Fiesta Bowl BCS National Championship game. It might have been unreasonable to expect a preseason game to matched one of college football’s greatest title games in intensity, big hits, and twists of fate, but no one expected the snoozer that ended up with a 36-24 Ohio State victory. If it wasn’t for the 2 and the 12 beside their names on the TV scoreboard, it would have been easy to forget that both team are members of college football’s 90th percentile.

Take It To The Bank, College Football Week 3

So I was sitting at the book at the Las Vegas Hilton over the weekend, and it was just like old times.

“Louie!!!”

“Hey, Louie, what’s cracking?”

“SECURITY!!!”

Now, maybe I groped that woman, maybe I didn’t. I’m an old man, and my mind ain’t what it used to be.

I do know, and I can say with absolute certainty…that those puppies were real. True story.

Now look, I don’t objectify women, but if they decide to come up to me, on a day where I am undefeated and making moneywell…I guess that money can be used as bail money too, huh?  Who’s with me?

I still got out with a slap on the wrist. Looks like fortune smiled down on ol’ Louie.

Maybe you can be just like me, Lucky. Heaven knows I was last week, now your chance to be Lucky like me. [Read more…]
