Cold Day at the Kohl Center: Iowa Hawkeyes Knock Off #11 Wisconsin

No, this headline is not a misprint, the #11 Wisconsin Badgers have indeed dropped their conference home-opener to the Iowa Hawkeyes by the score of 72-65.

Iowa (9-6, 1-1) took full advantage of a horrendous-shooting performance from the Badgers (24-for-69) and a lackluster showing on the defensive end despite Wisconsin (12-3, 1-1) being one of the best in the nation on that side of the ball.

Freshman Hawkeye Aaron White was the surprising star of the day with a game-high 18 points off the bench. [Read more…]

Milwaukee Bucks President Herb Kohl, (the man who the Kohl Center, home of the Wisconsin Badgers college basketball and hockey teams, is named after) is entering his 27th season of ownership of the NBA franchise.

Today Kohl reaffirmed his commitment to leading the Bucks and keeping the team in Milwaukee. He made his comments at a late morning news conference at his Senate Office in Milwaukee where the Democrat announced his decision not to seek a 5th term in the U.S. Senate.

#10 Wisconsin Defeats Penn State 76-66: Rapid Reaction

The #10 Wisconsin Badgers won their 18th straight game at the Kohl Center when they defeated Penn State 76-66 on Sunday. The Badgers (20-6, 10-4) benefited tremendously from their silky-smooth big men Jon Leuer and Keaton Nankivil who chipped in 22 a piece on a combined 16-of-23 shooting from the field.

With the win, Wisconsin has now defeated all 10 of the other Big Ten teams this season, the only school to do so. The Badgers are only the seventh team to beat all other Big Ten foes in the last 10 seasons.

Buckeye Recap: #13 Wisconsin Hands #1 Ohio State First Loss of the Year

thad matta

How they lost: The Grateful Red and their rally towels were in full force Saturday as #13 Wisconsin gave undefeated #1 Ohio State its first loss of the season. The game was neck-and-neck in the first half. David Lighty’s lay-up in the waning seconds, off of pedestrian defense by Wisconsin, gave Ohio State a 28-26 lead at halftime.

The Buckeyes pulled out to a 40-30 lead in the first five minutes of the second half thanks in large part to William Buford and his silky smooth step-back jumper. He used the same move over and over, almost toying with the Badgers. Buford finished the game with 21 points.

LIVE BLOG from the Kohl Center: #1 Ohio State vs. #13 Wisconsin

Kohl Center

30 minutes til tip-off: The Kohl Center is absolutely packed for this one. The student section is already full, as expected. This is the second most credentialed game in Badger history, according to the always reliable Twitter.

15 minute countdown: First time seeing Jared Sullinger in person. He is one big boy. The Badgers will really need to do a good job of getting a body on him. On the defensive end, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ohio State go in a 2-3 zone to keep Sullinger in the paint. If the Buckeyes go man, Sullinger may have a hard time guarding Leur/Nankivil on the perimeter.

Why Does #13 Wisconsin Play So Much Better At Home?

The Iowa Hawkeyes gave the #13 Wisconsin Badgers all they could handle in forty minutes of play on Wednesday. It wasn’t until overtime that the Badgers (18-5, 8-3) pulled ahead for a 62-59 win over the improving Hawkeyes (10-14, 3-9).

Starting forward Jon Leuer flaunted his Big Ten Player of the Week award by posting 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to help the Badgers rally past Iowa.

While the Badgers have been untouchable at the Kohl Center, the road has been an entirely different story in 2010-11.

Rapid Reaction: Wisconsin 82 Michigan St. 56

The #18 Wisconsin Badgers were a force to be reckoned with in a 82-56 drubbing of the Michigan State Spartans on Super Bowl Sunday. With the win, the Badgers (17-5, 7-3) extended their home-winning streak to 16 while the Spartans (13-10, 5-6) have firmly placed their selves in the discussion for a possible NIT invite.

The Green Bay Packers were definitely on the mind of most fans at the Kohl Center as chants of “Go Pack Go,” and title-town jerseys were commonplace in the crammed arena. Instead of being overshadowed by the big day, the Badgers embraced the hoopla and played one of their best games this season.

Rapid Reaction: Wisconsin 66 Purdue 59

For the 19th straight time, the #18 Wisconsin Badgers have followed a loss with a win as they upended #10 Purdue by the score of 66-59.

Tuesday’s game at the Kohl Center began as ugly as the blizzard which hit the Midwest at about the same time. Through fifteen minutes in the first half, Purdue (18-5, 7-3) had 10 turnovers and the Badgers (16-5, 6-3) were shooting around 30%. Similar to the storm, the game heated up in the second half with the lead changing hands numerous times.

But in the end it was the Badgers who prevailed behind Jon Leuer’s 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Rapid Reaction: Wisconsin 76 Illinois 66

“I think if that was a dance, they would have called it off. You said rhythm; their was absolutely no rhythm. If it was the Gong Show, they would have hooked us all,” said Bo Ryan in regards to the fifty fouls called in Saturday’s game with Illinois.

Despite the foul-fest which was reminiscent of a 1970s TV-show, the #20 Badgers 76-66 win over the #16 Fighting Illini improved their home-record to 10-0 and marked their 13th straight win at the Kohl Center.

Jon Leuer and Jordan Taylor combined to score 48 of Wisconsin’s (13-4, 3-2) 76 points and Demetri McCamey led Illinois (13-5, 3-2) with 23 points.

Jereme Richmond Doesn’t Play in Illini Loss at Wisconsin

bruce weber-upset

Despite the presence of two nationally ranked teams, exciting and entertaining college basketball this was not. The game being played in this Big Ten basketball contest was like the slush, snow, ice and stagnant dirty water outside the Kohl Center- slow, hard to navigate, sludge and drudgery. For the Illini at least, there was never any flow.

As unexciting as the first meeting (won by Illinois 69-61) was, this was even more wallowed in mire. The #20 Badgers got revenge on the #16 Illini from their first encounter 76-66, despite shooting just 1-12 from behind the arc in the first half.
