Understanding Northwestern’s Recent Dominance Over the Iowa Hawkeyes

Everyone has a foil- someone or something they just can’t get the best of. Dr. Claw had Inspector Gadget, Charlie Brown had Lucy, and her placekick holds; and I have the various forms of fried chicken.

And the Iowa Hawkeyes have the Northwestern Wildcats.

On Saturday, the Cats once again ruined the Hawks college football season. Last year they defeated No. 8 (AP) Iowa (No. 4 BCS) in Iowa City when the Hawkeyes were 9-0. This year, they ended their Big Ten title and BCS bowl hopes.

NU has now won three in a row in the series and five of the last six, including three games at Kinnick Stadium in 2006, 2008 and 2009. During ’08-’09 Iowa went 12-0 at home versus every non-Northwestern opponent.

Iowa still leads the overall series 46-23-3, but NU has again won 9 of the last 14. After the loss in Evanston, I had to ask the Hawkeyes what was going on with this recent purple reign.

Adam Robinson Continues Run of Solid Iowa Running Backs

Great tailbacks and the Iowa Hawkeyes football program have been like young Caucasian girls sporting giant, over-sized sunglasses. Another one pops up all the time, and the trend shows no sign of stopping.

Shonn Greene is now with the New York Jets in the NFL, after winning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2008. Ladell Betts is having a nice pro career with the Washington Redskins and Albert Young played a couple years with the Minnesota Vikings.  And don’t forget Sedrick Shaw, Tavian Banks (my personal favorite), Ronnie Harmon, Fred Russell, and Damian Sims.

The latest in line is sophomore Adam Robinson, who ranks third in the Big Ten and 16th in the nation in rushing
yards per game. He had his 8th career 100 yard rushing game Saturday at Northwestern.

Disturbed, Demented Iowa Fan Analyzes Northwestern

On Thursday, I will continue my series of Brutally Honest Big Ten college football Game Previews, this week focusing on the Northwestern Wildcats versus the Iowa Hawkeyes. but Before doing so, I’d like for you to take a look at what is the most disturbed and frightfully detailed vivisection of Northwestern football that I have ever seen. (Well, the piece did they last season with featuring Pat Fitzgerald and a baked potato is more appropriately described by that sense, but I can’t seem to find that link anymore)

It comes from a post written this past summer by SB Nation’s Hawkeyes blog “Black Heart, Gold Pants.”

Now you may wonder why a fan of such a solid program like Iowa would take the time to dismantle our Cats? This excerpt explains:

since The Beginning Of History in 1995 (which is crazy because I totally remember the ’80s and they were bitchin’) Northwestern’s held a 9-5 advantage, including wins in four of the last five encounters (and three straight in Kinnick).
