This is a football centric list, but we have the best college basketball rivalries on here as well.

Michigan State’s New Year’s Resolutions: Buckle Down Before Big Ten Play

christmas gift

‘Tis the season, my friends, and as 2012 approaches, a few new items may be on Tom Izzo and the Spartans’ “Wish List.” With conference play starting soon, here are a few things that Michigan State will be looking to fine-tune in time for big, bad Big Ten play.

Cody Zeller Key to Indiana Hoosiers Rebirth, Undefeated Season

cody-zeller

When college basketball season started at Big Ten media day on Oct 27th, you would have been very hard pressed to find any journalist who believed the Indiana Hoosiers would become the final Big Ten team to lose this season.

No one saw this renaissance happening this year, and certainly not in this convincing manner. Their 10-0 record includes a win over then #1 Kentucky, and it’s something IU Coach Tom Crean believes should be a building block:

Analyzing all 9 Undefeated College Basketball Teams

syracuse-orange

Nine undefeated teams left in all of college basketball. And none of them are named Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Duke (I listed them twice because ESPN loves them so much), Ohio State, Florida or Kansas.

In other words, if you’re still undefeated at this point of this season, you are legit- at least to some extent. By mid December, pretty much everyone has played in a conference “challenge” event and participated in a Holiday tournament. if you didn’t pick up an L in either of those situations, then you likely suffered a setback in some quality opponent non-conference scheduling.

Yes, most of the games up to this point have been cupcakes, but no one has really been able to feed on just  cupcakes for over a month. Let’s run through the 9 remaining perfect teams, in order of AP poll ranking.

Hoosiers Crush Butler, IU 6-0 while Bulldogs Rebuilding

hoosiers

The sixth victim for the Indiana Hoosiers this season is a much more impressive name than the first five. That’s right, IU college basketball is 6-0 this young season; although they beat all nobodies in their first five.

Last night Will Sheehey scored a career-high 21 points and Cody Zeller added 16 as Indiana crushed in-state rival Butler 75-59 in the title game of the Hoosier Invitational. That’s right, they destroyed last year’s national runner-up Butler Bulldogs, and although that’s more impressive than their first five wins, it’s certainly not a statement win.

Big 10 Hoops Media Day: Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue

tom crean

Thursday was Big Ten basketball media day, and with it came a set of special quotes and soundbites. Sure, this day is all about college basketball message control. The Universities and SIDs trying to manipulate the information they want you to have, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t some interesting and articulate statements out there.

When you get all the coaches and some of the top players in one conference room, you’ll have lots of gems. In fact, I’m going to do a separate post or two on the Michigan State Spartans Tom Izzo. but here’s some of the better non-Izzo soundbites.

Indiana Hoosiers Lose Star Maurice Creek FOR SEASON

Maurice Creek

A crushing blow was suffered by the Indiana Hoosiers today as the University announced Maurice Creek had surgery on his Achilles. His return is unknown, but considering this is happening so close to the start of college basketball season. He’s probably done for the season.

This is the third serious injury suffered by Creek in the past 22 months.

#72 Indiana Hoosiers: College Basketball 111 in 111

indiana cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Hey Tom, how’s that re-building process going? (Okay, as a Marquette alum, I promise that will be my only snarky Crean leaving for Indiana comment.)  In all seriousness, the resurrection of the Indiana Hoosiers basketball program has taken even longer than anticipated.  The arrival of hometown boy Cody Zeller was a huge get for Crean as the program should finally show some improvement this season.

Tom Crean Tweets His Disgust for Early Tip off with Illini

Tom Crean

I just gained a lot more respect for Indiana Hoosiers Coach Tom Crean. This is the highest amount of college basketball sensibility I have ever seen him display. For INEXPLICABLE reasons, the Big Ten decided to make his March 5th contest at border rival Illinois an early Saturday morning tip-off.

Now 11 A.M. doesn’t sound ridiculously early, but to a good portion of the media who cover the Illini, (by that I mean the large contingent of media members based in the Chicago area, an estimated 25-40% of their regular media) an 11 a.m. tip means either

a.) Getting your outlet/you yourself paying for a hotel in Champaign-Urbana the night before or

b.) Getting up at 6:30 a.m. to be there early enough to set up, effectively killing any plans you had for the Friday night before. And your plans for Saturday better be very early evening because you’ll now be ridiculously tired from covering this contest.

So with the weekend (and any semblance of a social life) now a casualty, we feel your pain Tom.

Here’s Tom’s thoughts/feelings on it.
