Houston Texans take Illini Whitney Mercilus, DE slips to #26

He came out of nowhere to win the Ted Hendricks Award as the best Defensive End in all of college football. He rose from obscurity to become an All-American at Illinois. Now Whitney Mercilus is a member of the Houston Texans, joining fellow Big Ten alum J.J. Watt of the Wisconsin Badgers as the men who will fill the pass-rushing void left by the departed 2006 #1 overall draft selection Mario Williams.

Mercilus story is an uplifting one. Watch this moving GIF of the celebration at his house when he got the call.

J.J. Watt’s brother also signs with Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin has it’s own version of the Plumlees. Like how all Plumlee brothers go to Duke, if you’re a Watt, you’re headed to Madison.

According to his Facebook page, and confirmed by a tweet from big brother J.J. Watt, Pewaukee junior tight end/defensive end T.J. Watt (6-4, 198) will be the third member of his family to play football for the University of Wisconsin.

First you had the NFL first round draft choice who’s been an impact player for the Houston Texans. Next you had the middle brother Derek Watt, who’s a current Badger. Now you’ve got a third member of the family.

Should BBWAA Rescind Ryan Braun’s MVP Award?

Normally Saturday nights are placid when it comes to off-field news in the sports world, but the regularly scheduled calm was interrupted in a big way when ESPN, among several other outlets, reported that Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. The slugger is coming off a season that saw him hit 33 HR’s and drive in 111 RBI en route to an NL MVP Award, as well as leading Milwaukee to their first division title since 1982. The positive test, if upheld, would mean that Braun would be suspended for the first 50 games of the 2012 season.

Indianapolis Colts Suffer Ugly Loss to Houston Texans

Indianapolis Colts fans now have an idea of what life is like without Peyton Manning in a meaningful game.

And it’s not a pretty idea.

The Colts opened the 2011 NFL season in quite an ugly fasihon, falling 34-7 to the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium. The Texans scored all of their 34 points in the first half.

One thing is for certain: this season will test the patience of the Colts’ fan base.

Indianapolis Colts’ Peyton Manning Reportedly Being Evaluated Again

Thanks to our ever-evolving flow of news, we’re seeing countless different rumors about what’s going on with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Is he undergoing another neck surgery? Could he miss the Colts’ season opener at Houston on Sunday? Is he out for the entire season?

This much we have seen confirmed: ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Manning was being evaluated by doctors once again regarding apparent slow progress in his recovery from offseason neck surgery. No further procedure had been planned yet.

We don’t know at this point how much time Manning may miss, but it’s starting to feel more and more like he’ll be a no-go for the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Texans.

A Post-Preseason Look at the Indianapolis Colts

So here stand the Indianapolis Colts.

Here they stand after a condensed offseason, an entire training camp without quarterback Peyton Manning, a 1-3 preseason and a cut to the 53-man roster.

I have to be honest with you, not even I am quite sure one week in advance of the team’s regular-season opener against the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium. [Read more…]

Indianapolis Colts Sign Kerry Collins

I have been saying this whole preseason that quarterback Peyton Manning would be good to go for the Indianapolis Colts’ season opener Sept. 11 at Houston.

I now concede it’s possible he might not be.

The Colts on Wednesday signed veteran quarterback Kerry Collins, who was Colts Vice Chairman Bill Polian’s first draft choice as GM of the Carolina Panthers, as insurance if Manning is unable to start Week 1.

Collins, 38, most recently played for the Colts’ division rivals, the Tennessee Titans, and started all but one game for the team during its charmed 2008 season; the Titans went 13-3 that season and claimed home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

While Collins might be a better option than current Colts backups Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky, it’s still a major concern for a team that relies so heavily on Manning.
