#30 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: College Football 77 in 77

Paul Johnson has made quite a name for himself at Georgia Tech. His quirky 1940s style pass the ball only if you have a gun to your head and you really have to offense has worked rather well.

It even put a WR, Stephen Hill into the NFL the triple option offense did. QB Tevin Washington could be just alright, and the Yellow Jackets will be a winning team. Or he could be special, Al Groh will do magic with the defense and Tech could be in the ACC title game…or anywhere in between.

Indianapolis Colts 2012 NFL Draft preview: Andrew Luck, then what?

New Indianapolis Colts GM Ryan Grigson made official Tuesday what we all pretty much knew back in January: the franchise will select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in today’s NFL Draft.

Luck is billed as the most pro-ready quarterback prospect to enter the league since Peyton Manning, the man he’s succeeding in Indianapolis. Some would go even further back and call Luck the surest thing since fellow Stanford great John Elway.

While I personally think such opinions are a bit overkill, I do think very highly of Luck, and I believe he can be the Colts’ next franchise signal-caller for many years to come. Given the recent organizational overhaul in Indy, however, quarterback is far from this team’s only thin spot. The Colts could use talent upgrades everywhere.

The fun, analytically speaking, starts with the No. 34 pick.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Melissa Kellerman wasn’t the only person to get tackled on the sidelines this past football weekend.

Don’t you love the rivalry weekend in college football? Zaniess ensues. In the bloodfeud between Georgia and Georgia Tech; predictably won by UGA, Tech receiver Stephen Hill was tackled by a very large state trooper with very good form.

The cheerleaders look on in beffudlement.

Duke Blue Devils, 903 and Mike Krzyzewski: Class Acts

Duke NCAA Champions

In 1990, I was a grade-school student who loved sports, and had many teams. However, when it came to college basketball, I was at a loss.

I grew up in Chicago. I love Notre Dame football, but beyond David Rivers and LaPhonso Ells, ND basketball left a lot to be desired. In the mid-80’s I loved Dallas Comegys and Rod Strickland, but after their respective departures, DePaul hoops became lost in a vacuum.

So, when Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Duke and UNLV met in the 1990 Final Four, I was a fan without a team. Sure, I rooted for ND and DePaul, and have since, but everyone enjoys cheering for a winning team.

The ’90 Final Four was held in Denver, CO, the boyhood home of my father. And my dad had managed to land tickets to the final round of the tourney.

As my dad and I entered McNichol arena that Saturday night, I was disappointed. I had chosen to root for UConn because my best friend had recently moved to Chicago from Connecticut. But Christian Laettner ended Tate George’s and all other UConn’s fans’ hopes with his first Elite 8 buzzer beater.

College Football 77 in 77: #49 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Yellow Jackets mascot

This year’s upcoming season of mediocre-to-slightly-above-average college football in Hotlanta will not be enough to distract Ramblin’ Wreck fans from the fact that they are on probation for four years and just had the 2009 ACC Championship stripped and vacated.

I’ve always said stripping of titles and wins are pointless. They may be removed from the media guides and programs, but they won’t be erased from our collective memories. Yet in this instance, vacating a title actually might have some teeth. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets don’t celebrate conference titles very often. The ’09 conference crown was their first since 1990, when they won a share of the national title.

Of course, it is the ACC. And winning that conference is kind of like being the richest man in Detroit. Not the richest man in Joliet, IL (that would be the Sun Belt Champion). But anyways, GT avoided any major problems like being taken off television or being ineligible for bowl games, so they have that going for them. Which is nice.
