FSU Cheerleaders, co-eds made pitch to #1 recruit Andrew Wiggins

florida-state-cheerleaders

Will Andrew Wiggins choose the Florida State Seminoles, Kansas Jayhawks, or North Carolina Tar Heels? Or will he be like EVERY other blue-chip recruit in this class and head to Big Blue Nation? (The Kentucky Wildcats)

The female student body at Florida State did all they could this past college basketball season to sell top recruit Andrew Wiggins on the school during his official visit in December. Well, we don’t know or not whether they did “all they could,” but nothing would surprise me at this point. Given what I’ve learned about the recruiting process in revenue producing college sports.

To quote “Fletch”:

“We’re in a grey area here. How grey? Charcoal.”

But on to more wholesome and above board recruiting activities.

2012 Big Ten/ACC Challenge Preview and Predictions

big ten/acc challenge

The twelve-game Big Ten/ACC Challenge tips off tonight with the top four ranked teams in the nation; Duke, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State all in action.  After losing the first ten challenges, the Big Ten looks for their fourth straight win in this battle of power conferences.  To be completely blunt; they should have zero problem doing so as the Big Ten has far more depth than the ACC.

#46 Florida State Seminoles: College Basketball 111 in 111

fsu cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Overrated. (Clap, clap, clap-clap, clap).  Even though they lost six valuable seniors from last season’s team that won the ACC Tournament, the Florida State Seminoles are ranked 24th in the preseason coaches’ poll.  As you can tell by my ranking, that’s way too high for a squad that will have to rely on a lot of inexperienced players in key roles.

xavier cincinnati fight

Since we have reached the unofficial midway point of the 2011-2012 college basketball season, we can begin to dissect which teams have gotten off to rather disappointing starts and are struggling as conference play has begun.  Here are some teams who have drastically underachieved and what has been the root of their problems.

Carrier Classic: ’09 National Championship Rematch Reaches New Heights

For the Michigan State basketball team, the tests that the players take in the classroom are probably a breeze compared to the tests Tom Izzo gives them.

How’s this for a multiple-choice question? To open your season you will:

a)  Face a  #1 ranked UNC squad

b)  Face a top-ten Duke team at Madison Square Garden

c)   Face a Gonzaga team in a game that has packed much more meaning in the past few years on the ‘Zags’ home court.

d)   Face a Florida State team that did maximum damage in the ACC last season

e)   All of the above

If you guessed E, you’re correct and you probably already know that a heavy-hitting schedule for Tom Izzo’s team isn’t even a surprise anymore. It’s expected. The words “cupcake schedule” don’t fly in East Lansing.

But opening on this tough tear may be just the swift kick-start that puts a little hair on the chests of this young remodeled team of Spartans players.

But this year, even Tom Izzo has outdone himself. [Read more…]

#33 Florida State Seminoles: College Basketball 111 in 111

florida state cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Defense, size, and physicality; that has been the name of the game for the Florida State Seminoles the past few seasons and will once again be the case for the 2011-2012.  The ‘Noles are not at the level of North Carolina or Duke, but are certainly a class above the rest in the ACC.

NBA Lottery Sleeper Pick? Florida State’s Chris Singleton

This NBA Draft season look out for Chris Singleton. No, not the late ’90s/early ’00s Chicago White Sox position player turned ESPN analyst, but one of the best defenders in college basketball this past season. If you’re looking for a lottery sleeper pick, then focus on the junior from Canton, Georgia

The Seminoles specialized in defense, leading the nation in points against average and their main weapon and leader Chris Singleton. The 6-9 forward is the ACC’s Defensive Player of the year.

“I’m one of the most versatile guys, and I feel like I can do whatever any team wants me to do. I feel like I can fit every system. Wherever you want to put me, I can play, I just want to win” Singleton said at the Draft Combine in Chicago.

Singleton had interviews with 15 teams during the combine sessions including: New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors.

Florida State’s Killer Defense Makes them Dangerous NCAA Tourney Team

Chris Singleton Florida State

VCU may be America’s lovable underdogs, but their opponent Friday night in San Antonio, the Florida State Seminoles, are probably the college basketball team no one wants to play right now. The Florida State defense, led by Peter Boulware, Derrick Brooks, Deion Sanders and Terrell Buckey (whoops, force of habit, sorry wrong FSU defense) is the best in the nation.

They held Texas A&M to 50 points and 31% shooting in their first tournament game. Then they dominated a high-scoring, hot shooting Notre Dame Fighting Irish team; holding them to 31% shooting, 23% from three.

The scary part? They did it all with jsut minimal minutes from their best player and defender, the ACC defensive player of the year Chris Singleton.

#10 Seed Florida State Upsets #2 Seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish

ben-hansbrough

You could say this was payback for the storied 1993 #1 vs. #2 college football game of the century between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Florida State Seminoles. It was the first ever ND-FSU meeting in college basketball, and the ‘Noles ran away with it 71-57. In a game that was never really ever in doubt after the first ten minutes.

The east coast really smacked up the hoosier state in this United Center double dip as the VCU Rams beat the Purdue Boilermakers 94-76 in the first game of the Chicago NCAA doubleheader.

Florida State’s Chris Singleton one of Nation’s Best Defenders

Look out for Chris Singleton. No, not the late ’90s/early ’00s Chicago White Sox position player turned ESPN analyst, but one of the best defenders in college basketball.

The Seminoles specialize in defense, leading the nation in points against average and they have their main weapon back in Chris Singleton. The 6-9 forward is the ACC’s Defensive Player of the year, and a likely NBA Draft pick. Singleton had 5 points in 16 minutes in FSU’s 57-50 opening round win over Texas A&M. It was his first action in more than a month.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State: Football Powers Clash for Sweet 16 Berth

 ty nash

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Florida State Seminoles have never met in college basketball. They’ve played some classic battles in college football, including #1 vs #2 “game of the century” in South Bend in 1993.

They’ll meet on the United Center hardwood Sunday night, with a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance on the line. Expect a tough, physical and very defensive-minded game. The Seminoles specialize in defense, and they have their main weapon back in junior forward Chris Singleton. The 6-9 forward is the ACC’s Defensive Player of the year, and a probable NBA Draft pick.
