Notre Dame Football players discuss Twitter policies

tyler-eifert-notre-dame-football

Twitter is one of the greatest inventions ever for a sportswriter. Is it also a blessing for Notre Dame football? Or a curse?

Twitter gives the reporter a chance to obtain legitimate quotes from players and coaches without actually having to be at the stadium. And sometimes the quotes are much more interesting than what you hear on gameday, because they haven’t been filtered. But to quote famous Notre Dame football fan Taylor Swift “trouble, trouble, trouble” can arise.

13 months ago, Notre Dame football DL Louis Nix (@IrishChocolate9) posted a tweet saying he may leave Notre Dame football and not return. That tweet caused a great deal of distraction for Coach Brian Kelly and his team, and it forced the coach to contemplate a new and stricter policy on what he deems “inappropriate” social media posts.

Notre Dame RB Cierre Wood entering NFL Draft

cierre-wood

Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood announced today he will forgo his final season of athletic eligibility and enter the 2013 NFL Draft. Wood leaves Notre Dame as the seventh-leading rusher in school history, having gained 2,447 yards on 450 career carries. No running back in Notre Dame history with as many career rushes as Wood has a better yards-per-rush average as his 5.4 yards-per-carry average.

His departure, along with the graduation of Theo Riddick, means the bulk of the carries will likely go to George Atkinson III or that stud freshman tailback, the #2 recruit at his position coming in. With no stud running back prospects in this class, and no sure fire first rounders at the position, it’s anyone’s guess where he ends up. Maybe rounds 2-4?

brian_kelly-notre-dame

By now you’ve heard that Brian Kelly will stay the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame. He will not be taking the Philadelphia Eagles gig. Numerous reports say he was offered a job with more money but he turned it down to remain in college football. So why did he interview with them in the first place? Kelly already got an extension and a raise. Was it for further leverage?

Whatever the true intentions, here’s the official statement from the school and Kelly. Here’s the party line:

Notre Dame loses #1 recruiting class ranking to Florida, as star LB switches schools

notre-dame

Just days after being embarrassed on national television by the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish suffered another loss. No, not coach Brian Kelly who had a very well publicized interview just hours after losing in the national title game, and just days after saying ND is his dream job, with the Philadelphia Eagles. Although that loss may or may not be coming soon, the defection of four star linebacker Alex Anzalone is already here.

Alabama’s blowout of Notre Dame does bad ratings (chart)

katherine-webb

Alabama became the first back to back champion in the BCS era last night with a  42-14 rout over Notre Dame. The game drew a 15.7 overnight rating Monday on ESPN, the network said Tuesday. That’s actually up 14 percent from last year’s game, another blowout Crimson Tide victory, 21-0 over LSU. But it’s down from the 16.1 for ESPN’s first BCS championship two years ago, Auburn’s 22-19 win over Oregon that was “for all the Tostitos” at the very end.

It got off to a decent start, but once the second half started, people checked out.

The only Notre Dame and Alabama brother combination ever

alabama-notre-dame

During the Civil War, you often literally had brother vs. brother. According to the Alabama Crimson Tide fight song they are “Dixie’s football pride.” And Indiana (despite the fact that it often votes with the old Confederacy these days in elections) was a Union state. So this Notre Dame vs. Alabama national title game matchup does have a bit of a Civil War feel to it.

Here are two brothers who fit the mold: Thomas Rayam Bama 90′ and I-Hardy Rayam Notre Dame 80′ are the only brother combination that played for both Notre Dame and Alabama. Ironically, some local people don’t understand why some national news source have not given this article some attention. Hardy Rayam, graduated from Notre Dame 1980′ BBA and was on Notre Dame’s 1977 Football National Championship Team. Hardy Rayam is also a Two Times Liver Transplant Survivor, since 1997 (PSC-Walter Payton).
