#26 Michigan Wolverines: College Football 77 in 77

The Michigan Wolverines has been playing this game for 131 seasons. Yep that’s a lot of college football; much more than pretty much every program. But this year there’s a lot more change in Ann Arbor than usual. A new coach in Brady Hoke, another expansion to Michigan Stadium, making the big house even bigger. And the very first night game in the stadium’s history versus Notre Dame.

Hoke caught some attention at his very first Big Ten media day, for making a couple statements which sounded a bit condescending and off-putting.

“This might sound arrogant, and if it is, it is. We’re Michigan,” Hoke said.

“We have a global education. We’re the winningest program in the history of college football. We have a tremendous staff of guys. The lifeblood for all of us, no doubt, is the guys you bring in your program. We’ve really tried to focus on the guys that fit the mold of Michigan with the integrity and character that we want to have.”

Michigan’s Denard Robinson Adjusts to New System this Fall

denard_robinson

If you’re looking for the very definition of dual threat quarterback, look no further than Denard Robinson; the man who will be calling signals at the line of scrimmage for the Michigan Wolverines this fall. Even in his two QB role models- you’ll see one traditional classic drop back passer (Peyton Manning) and one electrifying runner (Michael Vick). It’s this duality that makes him a Hesiman trophy candidate.

But as exciting a player he is to watch, he’s just as uninteresting an interview subject. He’s fun to watch, but just never really ever has anything to say to the media. His answers are usually short and spartan.

But he’ll still provide lots of good copy this fall as the Michigan offense adjusts to a new coordinator, new head coach and new system.

Denard Robinson wins Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Award

Denard Robinson

It was definitely a tale of two seasons for University of Michigan sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson. He absolutely destroyed the college football world after his first five games, and his team was undefeated. But the native of Deerfield Beach, Fla. slowed down, as did his team in the back half of the season, once the Wolverines started to play real defenses.

Still DenardD did enough to win the Big Ten offensive player of the year award from both the coaches and media. Robinson was also named to the All-Big Ten first team by the media and earned honorable mention recognition from the coaches.

Why Michigan’s Denard Robinson is ready to slow down

Denard Robinson

A Michigan football team that’s markedly improved over last year’s 5-7 record has been rejuvenated under the leadership of sophomore stud QB Denard Robinson.  It appears a dark – though brief – chapter in maize and blue history has come to an end.  The blazing fast recruit from Deerfield Beach, Florida has made good on a fat stash of potential, and the Wolverines are back in business.

The praise and hype for the kid they call “shoelace” (he doesn’t tie them when he plays) is well deserved.  Robinson has broken the Michigan single game yardage record.  No Big Ten quarterback has ever rushed for as many yards in a game.  He leads the nation in rushing yards per game, and stands second in total offense.  If you’re looking for an Achilles heel, you won’t find it.  At least not yet.

Wolverines Denard Robinson: Truly Bigger than Jesus?

denard_robinson

The late John Lennon once got in trouble for saying that The Beatles were “bigger than Jesus.” However, he simply conveyed a valid point- at that particular moment in history, the Beatles’ popularity was arguably bigger than Jesus Christ in certain places. Lennon also gave us one of my all-time favorite quotes: “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.”

Both apply to Michigan Wolverines football and their QB, the Heisman Trophy front-runner Denard Robinson. His numbers, his media coverage and his persona are getting huge right now- by the end of senior year he could be bigger than Tim Tebow (i.e. bigger than Jesus.) In certain parts of Michigan, maybe so already.

And no one counted on nor expected this production. Remember the talk of a balanced attack in the spread-option? Remember the days when Tate Forcier was the starter? Denard is what happens when you make other plans.

Michigan’s QB Denard Robinson: Simply Ridonkulous!

denard_robinson

“I’m speechless right now.  I really don’t know what to say right now.  That was amazing.  Our team obviously came together and the defense played well, and we just put it together.”

Those were the first words Michigan Wolverines QB Denard Robinson said when addressing the media in South Bend yesterday after his Wolverines defeated Notre Dame 28-24. He’s not the only speechless one. In the first two weeks of college football action, Robinson has gone on a ridiculous spree mutilating anything and everything in site like Jimmy Conway during the “Layla scene” in “Goodfellas.

For the second straight week, Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach HS) was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week.
