Cubs Surpass 3 Mil Fans, Name Farm System Players of the Year

The Chicago Cubs today reached three million fans at Wrigley Field for the eighth season in a row and will be one of only four major league baseball franchises to surpass the mark every year starting in 2004. Remember, this for tickets sold, not fans showing up. Because we’ve seen how empty Wrigley has been this season.

The Cubs are the only Chicago professional sports team to ever reach three million in attendance and will be one of only four teams in Major League Baseball to have reached three million fans in each of the last eight seasons, joining the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (currently on pace), St. Louis Cardinals (currently on pace) and New York Yankees. They did this in typical Cubs fashion losing 5-1 to the first place Milwaukee Brewers, who are headed to the postseason while the Cubs season pretty much ended in May.

The Brew Crew is doing this with a fraction of the payroll.

Chicago Cubs Sign Wayne Gretzky’s Kid

The Chicago Cubs have signed Trevor Gretzky, the son of Wayne Gretzky.  The Cubs drafted The Great One’s offspring this year in the seventh round of the MLB draft.  Trevor Gretzky, a 6’4″, 190 lbs first baseman, played high school baseball last year in Thousand Oaks, CA.  By signing with the Cubs, Gretzky will no longer attend San Diego State to play baseball under Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.  To learn more about Trevor Gretzky, click after the jump.

Cubs name Farm System Pitcher, Player of the Year

Given what phantasmagoria the Chicago Cubs season has been, talking about the future sure beats talking about the present. And discussing their minor league system seems more relevant than any analysis of who’s on the parent club these days.

Sometimes, their lineup looks like a AAA squad anyway.

Today the Cubs announced outfielder Brandon Guyer and right-handed pitcher Chris Archer have been named the organization’s Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. The two are members of Double-A Tennessee’s playoff squad that begins its best-of-five Southern League Championship series tomorrow night against the Jacksonville Suns.
