Big East Football Realignment HURTING Big East Basketball

At the Chicago college basketball media day, DePaul coach Oliver Purnell made a joke at the podium about announcing a new additions to a new super-conference that was planning on adding more teams in the near future.

We in the media appreciated his jab at the chaotic landscape that is conference realignment/expansion. And again at the DePaul media luncheon, Purnell was asked about the current game of musical chairs being played. And the Big East is feeling the effects harder than anyone else.

“These are crazy times, it’s happened before it’s just happening very quickly, and now it seems there’s a race,” Purnell said.

Big East Invites Boise State, Navy and Air Force Football to Join

boise state

I guess the Boise State Broncos are going to follow the TCU Horned Frogs around the carousel of college football expansion/realignment. You could say they’ll scoop up their “sloppy seconds.”

Today the Big East Conference invited Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only and SMU, Houston and Central Florida for all sports, a source with knowledge of the situation told The AP.

Mizzou Inevitably Joining SEC? Missouri Official Denies NY Times Report

mizzou cheerleaders

The University of Missouri has publicly stated it’s intentions of joining up with the SEC. And in many ways (adding the St. Louis and Kansas City television markets, developing natural rivalries or “border wars” with the state institutions of Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee) the Missouri Tigers are a good for the SEC.

But are they going to get enough SEC presidents to vote in favor of taking them? They currently seem one vote short.

(Update: The New York Times is reporting Missouri’s decision to officially apply for membership in the Southeastern Conference is “inevitable and imminent.“)

(Further Update: FOX 4 spoke to an university official speaking on behalf of Chancellor Brady Deaton on Monday, and they say that the report isn’t true. According to the official, there is no indication that the Board of Curators will discuss conference realignment, let alone make a decision on the matter.)

UConn and Rutgers in ACC: What a Monster Basketball Conference

uconn huskies cheerleader

Syracuse and Pittsburgh are on their way to the ACC, meaning they’re jumping from one abysmal college football conference (Big East) to one very mediocre college football conference. They’re also leaving the hoops super-conference (which looks like it’s about to implode) to what will be far and away the strongest hoops conference in the nation.

I’m sorry about the headline. Let me clarify.

I mentioned Rutgers as Connecticut’s partner. Every school seems to need a partner to move with; in order to keep the total number of teams in the league even.

Megaconference Era=Eventual Playoffs

texas_megaconference_era

If you’re rooting for the eventual demolishing of the BCS, in favor of a new college football playoff system (meaning you are in fact a human being who possesses a sense of decency, logic and rationality) then you should be rooting for Texas to do the right thing (whether that’s in the Big 12 or not) and start the seismic change required to get the ball rolling in the direction of an actual legitimate college football postseason. You can thank the Big Ten for creating the spark, but the Texas Longhorns are the explosive power mandated to blow this thing up.

However, if you’re a huge proponent of undefeated teams being denied a chance to play for the National Title, and you LOVE the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl, as well as the other 30-40 glorified exhibition games occurring every December-January, then by all means root for Texas’ decision to save the Big 12 become nothing more than a confirmation of the status quo. Texas is the Megan Fox of this conference realignment craze- everyone wants a piece, and they’re simply the hottest thing going right now.
