White Sox now tied wth Tigers for first place; stretch run looms

It took a sweep by the Detroit Tigers to knock the Chicago White Sox out of first place; and that’s exactly what happened. Justin Verlander won the highly anticipated match-up with Chris Sale, and the three game sweep restarts the AL Central race back at zero. Earlier in the season the Sox gave up first place to Detroit, but it was only for a day or two, as Chicago took it right back.

Will the White Sox cool off in the 2nd half?

I got a call from my cousin today who was in Chicago on a business trip. He called to let me know that, in what must be an unprecedented event, the World Series had already been decided in early July. I, baffled as to what he was talking about, let him continue.

He said that as he entered into the range of the Chicago radio stations he tuned his dial to a sports talk station and he was shocked to hear the host (he could not recall the host’s name) give praise up and down to the Chicago White Sox and ramble on about how great of a team they were, they were going to make some noise in the American League and were a team to be reckoned with. Typically, I would have laughed off the story, as my cousin is a die hard Minnesota sports fan and loves the Twins unconditionally (like me, but with less objectivity), but when coupled with the boasting of our own Mr. Banks about the said White Sox, I figured it was time someone brought them down to earth before the White Sox do it themselves. Enter me stage left.

THE WHITE SOX WILL MISS THE PLAYOFFS. GUARANTEED!

White Sox take over 1st Place! Andruw Jones clubs 400th HR

At the beginning of last month, NO ONE would have predicted this: the Chicago White Sox entering the 2010 All-Star break in FIRST PLACE in the AL Central.  They are 49-38, a half game up on the second place Detroit Tigers, and certifiably the hottest team in Major League Baseball. They beat the Royals 15-5 on Sunday, a game in which they clubbed 5 home runs, including a grand slam by Carlos Quentin, and the 400th career long ball for reserve outfielder Andruw Jones.

Like the rest of baseball they’ll have three days off now, but they enter the break on a tremendously hot stretch. After just sweeping division rival Kansas City, the Southsiders’ sizzling streak reads like this:

Eight straight wins, 21-4 in their last 25, 25-5 in their last 30, 14-1 in their last 13 at U.S. Cellular Field.
