#6 Duke vs. Michigan State: Champions Classic Preview

Michigan State doesn’t need to worry about the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Sure, Florida State will be a great team and they need to prepare for the Seminoles; but they’re getting the challenge right off the bat. Who plays the ACC’s big two back-to-back? The bitter rivals but traditional powers North Carolina and Duke in back to back games, and to start the season no less? Tom Izzo that’s who.

The Spartans return only 38% of their scoring, 48% of their rebounding, and 44% of their from last year, but this is no rebuilding season. No time for that with a schedule like this.

Duke (2-0) faces Michigan State (0-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden in the first game of the Champions Challenge. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (EST)

What’s most interesting about the sport of college basketball is how much it’s Q Rating as a sport increases during this season. No other sport has such a wide level of disinterest in the beginning (and again that really bothers me. I’m not advocating this apathy- just pointing it out) but then creates such a tremendous buzz at the end. Everyone loves March Madness, but not everyone cares in November, although they should.

There have been more key non-conference games in November and December lately, but now it’s going to be ramped up a notch, and right from the very the start.

Four of the game’s marquee programs: Michigan State Spartans (overlook last night’s bad loss at Syracuse, they’ll be alright come March), the Duke Blue Devils, Kentucky Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks have all agreed to get together and get the season started right and tight.
