Superstar Auburn Duo Declare for Draft, Top 5 NFL Picks?

Big news regarding the NFL Draft; two underclassmen from the national title team in college football; announced there going pro.

With Auburn, the conversation always begins with their QB Cam Newton, the reigning Heisman winner who was dominant on the offensive side of the ball for the Tigers. But they have a player on the opposite side of the ball who is has been just as dominant this fall; and who started the year in obscurity much like Newton. That’s Nick Fairley, who may end up getting picked ahead of Newton.

Cam Newton: Most Polarizing Player in College Football

Write any piece about scandal in college football these days, and you’ll inevitably hear from somebody who gets offended and then relates the situation to Cam Newton. Some will even ask you to write about “Scam Newton” (or better yet, $cam Newton) instead of the topic you covered. Or maybe you’ve seen the graphic of the “Camburglar,” which depicts the Heisman winning QB as the famous McDonald’s Hamburglar character, except he’s heisting a lap top instead of hamburgers.

At BCS Championship game media day, a reporter brought up how Auburn was not greeted very warmly at the airport; AU Coach Gene Chizik blatantly dodged the question by bringing up the Tigers’ die-hards that were on hand.

And it’s true- Auburn has plenty of fans; but man oh man, do they have their detractors too.

Picks for Every Single College Football Bowl Game!

TSB’s leading resident college football and college basketball nerds pick each and every game; often in very snarky fashion. DK=David Kay, PMB= Paul M. Banks

Dec. 18 New Mexico Bowl: BYU vs. UTEP, 2 p.m., ESPN

(DK) BYU.  The only bowl game in which neither team has a winning record.  What a way to start the bowl season!  I got the Mormons.

(PMB) BYU. It’s a good thing Brigham Young has about 20,000,000 descendants, because I can’t imagine anyone not related to him having even the most remote interest in this game. I’m picking the followers of Joseph Smith as well.

uDrove Humanitarian Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State, 5:30 p.m., ESPN
(DK) Northern Illinois.  Hey, I actually know something about Northern Illinois.  Their head coach left for Minnesota and they hired Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Doeren to be their new head man.  He is staying with the Badgers through the Rose Bowl though.  What does that mean for the actually game?  No idea.

(PMB) NIU. This is a very underrated game; and too good to be this early in the cycle. Huskies’ Chad Spann continues legacy of Northern Illinois rushers: Michael “the Burner” Turner, LeShon Johson, Garrett Wolfe etc.

R&L Carriers Bowl: Ohio vs. Troy, 9 p.m., ESPN
(DK) Ohio.  It’s the fourth best team from the MAC taking on a team from the Sun Belt Conference!  Ratings Monster!

(PMB) Ohio. Only because they had a mascot that stalks, plots and attacks other mascots in cold blood. As for the game- YAWN!

Dec. 21
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg: Southern Mississippi vs. Louisville, 8 p.m., ESPN

(DK) Southern Mississippi.  Brett Favre went to Southern Miss so obviously I am picking them.

(PMB) SMU. Reading the full name and match-up for this bowl game is the second most redneck thing I’ve ever done in my life. The first is spending last Christmas in a rural VA triple wide; with spotty cell phone service, no internet and three whole channels. Yes, you can’t pick your family. But you sure can pick (or more importantly not pick) your in-laws.

Cam Newton’s Dad not Attending Heisman Ceremony, Releases Statement

Cecil Newton, the father of the most decorated player in the 2010 college football season will NOT be attending the Heisman ceremony in New York City on Saturday.

Cam Newton has full NCAA eligibility, but it was previously thought that he inevitably would not, and that Heisman Saturday would have kind of “grey area” surrounding it. But despite all the turmoil and allegations, here he is with Heisman hopes live and kicking. More than live and kicking, he’ll probably win the award hands down. But his dad won’t be there and here’s why:

Auburn QB Cam Newton: Soon to be Ruled Ineligible?

I’m a huge admire of Fanhouse college football writer Clay Travis. So much so that I even had him on here as an interview guest. I enjoy his work, especially on the occasions that he discusses the elephant in the room. Actually, he’ll invite the elephant over to the main table and get him to start dancing on the table and making a spectacle for the whole room. And sometimes we need that. Like right now.

Auburn QB Cam Newton is the runaway front-runner for the Heisman. And his undefeated Tigers are in the thick of the national title race. Therefore the NCAA investigation of him could end up  dwarfing the Reggie Bush scandal.

Travis believes he’ll be ruled ineligible and all the AU wins he led them to will be vacated.
