Kevin Wilson Did It Again … and It Cost Indiana This Time

New Indiana University football coach Kevin Wilson is quickly developing a reputation as a riverboat gambler … to a fault.

He unsuccessfully attempted a fourth-down conversion rather than kicking an easy field goal last week in the Hoosiers’ season-opening loss to Ball State, but it didn’t make a difference in the final score of that game.

This time, it did. Wilson tried a fake field goal in the third quarter of Saturday’s 34-31 home loss to Virginia that would have greatly affected the outcome with an easy three points.

Indiana Hoosiers Open Kevin Wilson Era with Loss

I’m not quite sure that was the way the Indiana University football team wanted to begin its new era.

Playing their first game of the 2011 season and under new coach Kevin Wilson, the Hoosiers looked pretty much like, well, the Hoosiers — the IU teams of the last three seasons under Bill Lynch and the IU teams throughout the program’s history — in a 27-20 loss to in-state foe Ball State on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Indiana Hoosiers Fire Bill Lynch

bill lynch

Embattled Indiana Hoosiers Head Coach Bill Lynch will officially learn his fate in a couple hours. The decision to retain or fire him (and we are 99% sure it will be to fire him) will be announced around 5PM ET tonight as Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass will host a press conference to discuss the future of the Indiana University football program.

This decision just became much less cut and dry with IU’s win over their arch-rival, the Purdue Boilermakers yesterday. (Yet know a few more outlets are reporting it has already been made, and he’s gone). The win kept the Hoosiers from going winless in Big Ten play but also undefeated in the non-conference slate. I’m not sure if that’s some kind of record, but it certainly sounds like it could be.

And that fact is a loud statement about the weakness of IU’s scheduling. And a bit ripe with unintentional comedy.

Big Ten Media Day One Wrap-up, Coaches Edition

big ten conference
Check out that snazzy graphic above.  Study it.  Love it.

And then realize that this is the last year that it will be relevant and current.

Much like the conference expansion dominated the news after the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Big Ten’s expansion to add Nebraska was the dominant topic of Big Ten Media Day on day 1.

It got a little tiresome, quite frankly. [Read more…]
