Marquette should be even better in 2013-2014

Vander Blue

While the disappointment of laying an egg in the Elite 8 against Syracuse still lingers, the future remains extremely bright for a Marquette program coming off their third straight trip to the Sweet 16.  Assuming Buzz Williams returns for his sixth season and the incoming recruiting class remains in tact, the Golden Eagles should be even better in 2013-14.

Butler, Xavier, Creighton joining Catholic 7 basketball conference (Big East Update)

catholic-7-basketball-conference-xavier

Multiple sources report The Butler Bulldogs, Creighton Blue Jays and Xavier Musketeers will join the Catholic 7 basketball conference which consists of the seven college basketball only schools previously in the Big East: (Catholic institutions Marquette, DePaul, Georgetown, Villanova, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Providence)

Not since Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation have a group of Catholics felt so freed and empowered. (Remember they were all Catholics before they became Protestants and later Lutherans. Catholic excess was what they were “protesting” against. I guess 7 Catholic schools gave up the Big East conference for Lent.

The Catholic 7 basketball conference will still keep the Big East name. New league begins play July 1

Temple to take West Virginia’s spot in the Big East?

big_east_logo

The Big East has a slot open now that West Virginia is being allowed to leave immediately for the Big 12 conference. Who will grab it? Possibly Temple who played in the Big East in football only from 1991-2004, but was forced out of the league. Now that the Big East has less options, and their college football situation is so awful, suddenly Temple doesn’t seem so bad.

It played as an independent and eventually landed in the Mid-American Conference in 2007. The Owls’ other sports programs, including men’s and women’s basketball, are in the Atlantic 10.

Big East New Additions Make Horrible Mockery of Geography, Travel

boise-state

It is being widely reported that the Big East conference is preparing to announce the additions of Boise State and San Diego State for college football only.

And Houston, Central Florida and SMU for all sports as soon as Wednesday. The five schools will join in 2013.

Let’s say that again: San Diego State, in the most SOUTHWEST portion of the United States, and Houston, a shirt drive from the GULF OF MEXICO is in the BIG EAST.

Remember when the NFL had a NFC West division with Atlanta, New Orleans and Carolina? Well that looks like brilliance and genius compared to this set up. The NHL saw they had one geographical division that made no sense, so they officially realigned today; so the BE went and did the opposite.

Big East Football Realignment HURTING Big East Basketball

At the Chicago college basketball media day, DePaul coach Oliver Purnell made a joke at the podium about announcing a new additions to a new super-conference that was planning on adding more teams in the near future.

We in the media appreciated his jab at the chaotic landscape that is conference realignment/expansion. And again at the DePaul media luncheon, Purnell was asked about the current game of musical chairs being played. And the Big East is feeling the effects harder than anyone else.

“These are crazy times, it’s happened before it’s just happening very quickly, and now it seems there’s a race,” Purnell said.

Big East Invites Boise State, Navy and Air Force Football to Join

boise state

I guess the Boise State Broncos are going to follow the TCU Horned Frogs around the carousel of college football expansion/realignment. You could say they’ll scoop up their “sloppy seconds.”

Today the Big East Conference invited Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only and SMU, Houston and Central Florida for all sports, a source with knowledge of the situation told The AP.

Big East On The Way To Becoming Hoops Only Conference?

big east logo

With Syracuse and Pitt selling out and heading to the ACC, the Big East is in serious jeopardy of disbanding as a football conference; especially if the rumors are true that UConn and Rutgers will soon follow suit.  With football being at the forefront of these super conference realignments, the most competitive basketball conference in the country is losing elite programs, but could still survive as a hoops only league.

Rejoice TCU! You’re joining the Big East, and will soon have BCS Chances

TCU_cheerleaders

In a deal that’s great for both parties involved. TCU joined the Big East conference today. If you’ve watched ESPN College Football Gamenight this season, you’ve noticed their running gags “Big East Bound and Down” and the “ACC Wheel of Destiny” to make fun of how mediocre, or just plain the respective conferences are.

Although this move will not help the TCU Horned Frogs this season, when it comes to possibly getting into the BCS title game. At least in a couple of years, their chances of not getting screwed by the BCS will be a lot, lot smaller. Being in a power conference and playing a power conference schedule will make a huge difference. Because right now they’re not in a conference that brings anything to the table.

And this is great for the Big East, since they’re football is even worse than the ACC, which means it’s downright pathetic.
