Annoying Rick Reilly asks Aaron Craft about being Annoying

aaron-craft

Aaron Craft vs. Rick Reilly in a battle of who’s more annoying? I’ll go with the untalented ESPN pundit. Rick Reilly is just about as entertaining and interesting as a mosquito bite.

Aaron Craft, the 2013 Big Ten Tournament MVP, is the new Ohio State Buckeyes most polarizing player. Big Ten fans don’t like him too much. If THE Ohio State University goes far in the NCAA tourney, he’ll be as disliked as some Duke Blue Devils players.

There was a “pot calling the kettle black” at NCAA Tournament media day between Reilly and Aaron Craft. Reilly truly looked the fool; a role he’s quite used to. And the Q&A that follows means will soon be subjected to more of his crappy pablum; this time with an “Aaron Craft is annoying” twist.

2013 NCAA Tournament: West bracket breakdown

kelly olynyk

Warning: I will not be responsible if you copy this bracket and are out of your NCAA Tournament pool by Sunday.  However, if you do listen to my college basketball wisdom and win some money, I want 20% of the pot or at least a shout-out on your twitter or facebook page.

I don’t love the West Bracket. At. All. And by that I mean there is no stand out team who I want to pick going to the Final Four.  Of all the brackets, this seems to be the most likely one to see a darkhorse emerges since I’m not sold on the top seed Gonzaga or #2 Ohio State.

Ohio State: Evil Empire of the Big Ten Tournament

ohio-state

It’s official, with a 50-43 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten title game, the Ohio State University has now become the Evil Empire of the Big Ten Tourney. I’ve been covering the Big Ten Tournament for four years, and Ohio State has been in the tourney final game each time. Actually, they’ve gone to 5 straight title games and 8 overall. The tournament has only been in existence since 1998. Ohio State head coach That Matta has the Big Ten Tournament’s highest winning percentage and second most wins behind Tom Izzo of Michigan State.

In other words, they’re the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers, Notre Dame, Duke Blue Devils of the BTT. They’ve become the “anyone but them” team for fans of other Big Ten teams. Which is a huge compliment. You have to be very successful to be hated. You have to be highly relevant in order to generate a backlash.

If you’ve been to a Big Ten Tournament recently, then the Ohio State marching band’s “Battle Cry” and “Hang on Sloopy” have become as overplayed as “Gangnam Style” and “Harlem Shake.”

Ohio State’s Aaron Craft: Best Distributor in College Basketball?

aaron_craft

I believe the best compliment you can ever give a point guard is “excellent distributor.” I asked Ohio State “1” Aaron Craft what he thought of the term at Big Ten media day.

“I’ll take any kind words I can get,” he responded.

Craft has had the benefit of playing with a marquee player in Jared Sullinger; giving him a strong force to work the ball inside to.

“Playing with a guy like Jared, and a guy like Evan Turner (NBA overall #2 pick in 2010) in the summer, makes us better. It’s a lot more fun and you always now what you’re going to get.

Preview: #6 Michigan State versus #10 Ohio State

Ohio State just too big and strong for Northwestern: 75-73

jared-sullinger-nba-draft

Ohio State came in 33-2 and winners of 13 straight versus Northwestern when nationally ranked. So you had to like the chances of the nation’s #10 team in Evanston. When you saw them make their first six shots and jump out to a 69% to 35% field goal average (nearly double) about halfway through the first half, I’m sure you liked their chances even more.

Give Northwestern (17-12, 7-10) credit though, they did keep fighting, and they fought hard to nearly force overtime in the final seconds.

Michigan at Northwestern: can Wolverines carry momentum on the road?

trey-burke

Michigan picked up their most significant victory of the season Saturday night, edging Ohio State by five points in a game that had more to do with the Wolverines’ suffocating half court defense than any of the Buckeyes’ shortcomings on offense. The win pushed the Maize and Blue’s sterling record at  Crisler Arena  this season to 15-0.

In two key matchups where the Wolverines were at a perceived disadvantage, they came out on top: Trey Burke was better than Aaron Craft, and even more astonishing, Jordan Morgan was better than Jared Sullinger.

Impressive as it was, that victory won’t have any effect on how the Wolverines play Tuesday night when they go on the road to face a Northwestern team in dire need of a résumé-boosting win. Why? Michigan simply isn’t the same team away from home this season.

Trey Burke leads Michigan in upset over Ohio State

Trey burke

Trey Burke and Jared Sullinger were best friends growing up, and they both attended Northland High School in Columbus, Ohio. But on Saturday night, they were playing against each other, and it was all business.

Despite having won midweek at Minnesota, Sullinger and the Buckeyes came into Saturday’s night matchup in Ann Arbor needing a win in order to stay within striking distance of conference leading Michigan State, and more importantly, to stay in contention for a NCAA Tournament 1-seed. OSU had won six straight against the Wolverines, including a 15-point drubbing at Value City Arena on January 29.

Is #2 Ohio State the Best Team in All of College Basketball?

aaron-craft

As we put the finishing touches on another season of non-conference play in college basketball, we can take stock of where a lot of programs are, and where they are not.

In the Big Ten, the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes are clearly the class of the league. Yes, Wisconsin and Michigan are also ranked and we know they can ball. The Indiana Hoosiers are way better than any of us anticipated. Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue and Northwestern could all be solid, or they could all be NIT. All of these teams have struggled putting away the scrubs, while OSU blows all their scrub opponents out of the water.

I think the Buckeyes aren’t just the best team in the conference, but also the nation. Why because now they have an Aaron Craft to complement a Jared Sullinger.

The NBA Draft Stock Report checks in on which players have made a name for themselves in the past week; either helping or hurting their future draft position.  These early pre-season tournaments give players great exposure matching up against marquee opponents on national television.  In this week’s addition,  a season ending injury hurts one players stock while a first round prospect ends up in Jim Calhoun‘s doghouse.
