Panthers Jon Beason rips 49ers Alex Smith

The San Francisco 49ers went 13-3 last year despite their QB finishing dead last in the NFC in passing yards per game. In defending his game managerial type statistics in a recent interview, Niners quarterback Alex Smith slammed Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton‘s statistics. Newton’s teammate Jon Beason, returned fire on Twitter yesterday.

But first, here’s what the QB said.

“I could absolutely care less on yards per game,” Smith said according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.

“We’re up in the third and fourth quarter and naturally you’re going to be in four-minute offense. You’re going to be grinding it out. You’re going to be running the ball a lot more and you’re not going to have as many 300-yard passing games.”

Prompting Beason to tweet (@jonbeason)

“Alex smith, don’t hate on Cam Bc your stats would’ve gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That’s after a 13-3 yr.”

Damn shawty! That’s a shot across the bow. Now the NFL has an 8 Mile battle rap scene on its hands this offseason. Good, we need something for our football fix.

Newton has not made a public comment yet. However, I have a feeling this story has plenty of play left in this media cycle,
