As baseball season comes to a close and football interest starts to wane, I am overjoyed that autumn has blessed us with its turning leaves and bouncing basketballs. Yes, it is now time to lace up the sneakers and turn on the remote, as Oklahoma City Thunder season begins. The Thunder are led by one of the game’s rising starts, Kevin Durant, or so I am told. Personally, when I see Kevin Durant I see a human being very good at playing basketball, and not a giant ball of gas rising into space. Besides, stars do not rise. They sit up their in the planetarium sky, sparkling and winking with lambent energy. Durant does none of these things. He is made of meat.

Nevertheless, when I watch the Thunder roam about in the preseason, I wonder if their games are preceded by Tampa Bay Lightning games. This would make sense, as light travels faster than sound, and lightning is usually accompanied by booming thunder. Furthermore, I wonder how the word “thunder” is visualized or personified when choosing a mascot or team logo, as thunder is not so much a thing as it is a sound, invisible and formless. Anyhow, I contemplate such things when watching the Oklahoma City Thunder play preseason NBA basketball games on my direct tv hd dvr, and look forward to the season with NBA League Pass.
