” Straight Outta Compton, ” the N.W.A. biopic is killing it at the box office. I can’t wait to see it, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the content of the film. However, they made one huge anachronistic error. The Chicago White Sox hat worn by Eazy-E in the opening scene set in 1986, didn’t come out until late 1990.
The White Sox adopted it as their logo in 1991.

In the early ’90s (which was a totally different era than not the early ’90s, in the words of Hawk Harrelson) White Sox gear (along with the L.A./Oakland Raiders and L.A. Kings) was omnipresent in the wardrobes of hip-hop icons. The silver and black was where it’s at. Fellow N.W.A. member Dr. Dre made the ball cap his signature piece of clothing when 1992’s “The Chronic” came out. He even referenced it in his hit single “Dre Day.” “got my chrome to the side of his White Sox hat.”
It’s an honest mistake by the production team of Straight Outta Compton, but the movie did very well on opening weekend.
“ Straight Outta Compton ” is an even bigger chart topper than initial estimates suggested.
The rap drama debuted to $60.2 million, more than the $56.1 million that Universal, the studio behind the film, reported. That number ranks as the fifth biggest August opening in history and the biggest debut for an R-rated film during the month.
