This weekend, the 2016 World Cup of Hockey will begin, bringing with it the biggest superstars in the National Hockey League. Starting September 17 in Toronto, eight teams will vie for the championship in a tournament not played since 2004. Let’s take a look at the chances for Team USA.

The United States hasn’t performed all that well internationally lately. One difference in this tournament is that it was created by the NHL, not the IIHF, and the Americans are constructed like an NHL team. In retaliation to the skill of Canada, the US has gone for size and grit more than skill and systems. As long as the USA doesn’t forget that other teams are also in the tournament, they might get to see if the “Beat Canada” mentality pays off in a title.

Potential Lines
Best Case Scenario
One, or all, of the goalies show their pedigree and lockdown the crease. Their size disrupts other teams and they bully thir way into the finals, where they prove that the 1996 tournament victory was no fluke.
Worst Case Scenario
The construction ideas fail miserably, and the team gives up goals, which they can’t match themselves. Being upset by Team Europe in the opening game could lead to an 0-2 hole, and no chance of making the semifinals.
