Tottenham G Brad Friedel: “Premier League is a marketing monster”

Tottenham Hotspur Goalkeeper Brad Friedel is a great soundbite, and an even better conversationalist.

He’s done fantastic work as a part time broadcaster with BBC and FOX Sports, and it’s pretty clear that the 43 year old, the oldest player in Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur history (once he plays in a game this season he’ll become the oldest player in Premier League history) has a very bright future in broadcasting.

“The Premier League is a monster of a marketing vehicle. It’s the best in the world at that,” Friedel (an American, who’s from relatively nearby Lakewood, Ohio) told me today in Chicago, Illinois. USA.

“it also boasts the most exciting soccer in the world from the top of the league to the bottom, and the best fan support” said the man who holds the record for the most consecutive starts.

Brad Friedel is with Spurs as they take on the Chicago Fire of the MLS tomorrow night at Toyota Park. It will be interesting now to see how he fits in with the team, now that the North London side has acquired Michel Vorm. Along with first team keeper Hugo Lloris, it’s a crowded field at that position for Tottenham. And it’s something we’ll look at another time.

Here’s the full audio of our discussion with Brad Friedel. He talks the power, strength and growth of the Premier League.
