There are openly gay former players within some of the four major sports, but no player has come out of the closet while still being a member of an active roster. We came much closer when current Phoenix Suns CEO and team president came out.
And now former MLS player David Testo, who was very recently a part of the soccer league, has come out.
According to ESPN:
The former Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder tells CBC Radio-Canada that teammates knew he was gay and accepted him, but he was afraid to go public until now.
“It’s like carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying around luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself,” Testo told CBC.
The 30-year-old player from North Carolina says he feels more confident and mature and now is ready to speak openly.
