Manchester United Manager Louis van Gaal is feeling very good after today’s result, a 1-0 win at Manchester City. Previously left for dead in the race for top four, United are now just one point behind their noisy neighbors City for that final UEFA Champions League slot with eight matches left to play.
The Red Devils are now level with West Ham for fifth place in the Premier League table, although the Hammers are still ahead on goal differential. However, as LVG put it, a top four finish is “in their own hands.”
“I have said in advance that we must win this game and we have done it, so I am very happy because otherwise the gap was too big if they won,” Van Gaal said. “Or a draw is still four points, eight matches to go, so then it should be very difficult.
“Now it is in our own hands, I think. We have to win our games, we have more home matches than away matches. We don’t lose so much at Old Trafford so we have a big chance.”

Here is the Van Gaal post match interview for television. Today’s result certainly continues the perplexing season long trend for United of taking points from the league’s top clubs, but consistently dropping those points against the league’s bottom feeders.
Truly, the old cliche of “they play both up and down to their level of competition” really applies here.
