United Made World Record Bid for Thomas Muller, Reveals Bayern

The idea of Thomas Muller leaving Bundesliga ruling oligarchs Bayern Munich for the Premier League doesn’t seem very likely at all, but it certainly won’t stop the big clubs from trying. According to a report in the Daily Mirror half a year ago, Chelsea wanted to sign Muller and potentially make a big money move that would have made him their main striker. And that was nothing compared to the Thomas Muller bid made by Manchester United.

Muller admitted last summer that he turned down a chance to join United, and today Bayern Chief Executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that the bid was for a world record amount.

In an interview with German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Rummenigge said the offer was not considered for one second.

“We had a mad offer from Manchester United last year, which was not a topic for one second. We could have secured a world-record transfer fee,” Rummenigge said.

“Thomas Muller came out of (the youth academy). (He is) born near Munich, formed here, the hero of the fans.”

The Bayern boss also said that his club had the chance to sign Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg last summer, before he signed with Manchester City for an astronomical £54.5 million.

“We had an offer to sign De Bruyne in 2015 for the following year,” Rummenigge said.

“The fee plus salary amounted to over 100 million euros, so the risk was too high. We have now signed a center-back in Mats Hummels, because we have enough quality and quantity in attack.”
