Manchester United Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has had a rough go at Old Trafford. He suffered both a major knee ligament injury and a severe regression in form. Schweinsteiger was named to the Premier League top flop lists by numerous publications as his 2015-16 season at Old Trafford has gone quite poorly.
He wasn’t expected to have much of an impact on the German National Team, but Deutchsland Manager Joachim Low may have a substantial role for him yet at the 2016 European Championships.
One of the most iconic players in German football history proverbially went to bat for Schweinsteiger, the current national team captain, while also taking a swing at Manchester United.
“Bastian has surprised me,” Franz Beckenbauer wrote in Bild, the German national paper of record.
“He was stronger than expected in his 24 minutes against Hungary. He showed great joy of playing and also spiritual motivation. We all know how strong his will can be. We all remember his bloody face in the last minutes of World Cup final. This we will see again.”
“Why? Because he is away from the problems at Manchester. I guess he is feeling really comfortable in the Germany squad,” the man affectionately nicknamed Der Kaiser continued.
