Jose Mourinho Shows Support for Claudio Ranieri; Wears “CR” on Shirt

In April of 2016 there was talk of Claudio Ranieri being knighted and having streets named after him. Documentaries glorifying his achievements were in the works. In February of 2017 he was sacked. It’s the message of the Frank Sinatra standard “That’s Life” manifesting itself in a very extreme, all too real manner.

“That’s life, that’s what people say. You’re riding high in April; shot down in May.”

While Leicester City, the reigning Premier League champions no longer endorse Claudio Ranieri, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho does.

In his press conference today, in advance of the EFL Cup final on Sunday versus Southampton, Mourinho wore a shirt with the initials CR emblazoned on it.

Jose Mourinho on Claudio Ranieri today:

“He wrote the most beautiful history of the Premier League. He’s somebody that probably deserves the Leicester stadium to be named after him, and he’s sacked. I think Leicester made history two years in a row.

“One year because they did the most beautiful thing in the Premier League, and now also their decision has everyone in football united because it’s very difficult to accept. At the same time, it’s good for all of us to realise how football is at this time. We need to adapt to it.”

“I thought last season when I was sacked as the champion it was a giant negative thing. Now I realise that was peanuts compared to what’s happened to Ranieri. My Instagram and my shirt [Mourinho is wearing a United polo shirt with ‘CR’ on it] are a homage and I don’t think he needs more. Nobody can delete what he did.”

“If some of the stories of what I’m reading are true, it’s difficult to find words to justify it, but it’s something we managers have to be ready to cope with.”

Mourinho also expressed how upset that he was with his club’s Europa League draw.
