Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho praised Javier Hernandez earlier this week while also indicating that the club did not make a move for their former player. Mourinho said the re-acquisition of “Chicharito” wasn’t needed because the club decided to fill their striker void elsewhere, signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton for £75 million instead.
Mourinho made the comments in response to Hernandez signing a £16 million deal with West Ham United, ending the Mexico star’s time with Bayer Leverkusen.
Mourinho had previously said that had he been in charge at United when Louis van Gaal sold him to Bayer, Javier Hernandez would have stayed at the club. Mourinho also went on to give Hernandez extensive praise. Today Chicharito returned the favor, and also added that he has evolved since his time at Old Trafford.
‘I say thank you to Mourinho and all the people around Man United that speak about myself and my qualities,’ Hernandez said during his unveiling press conference at West Ham on Friday.
‘I am going back to my old club and my old house in Old Trafford. I am 100 per cent to help my team win the three points and start the season on the right foot.
‘I have evolved a lot since I left Man United but I would prefer to show it rather than just talk about it. I wanted to challenge myself again. That’s the way I am and I want to improve as a person and as a footballer.’
Javier Hernandez, who scored 37 goals in 103 appearances for United, and 28 in 54 for Bayer, also claims that he had other options before joining the London club.
‘I had other options in Spain, two in Italy,’ said the Guadalara native.
