“I have decided that this will be my last season,” Landon Donovan tweeted a few minutes ago. And now begins the barrage of media outlets claiming he’s the greatest player in American history. Not true.
He’s the greatest player in history according to ESPN, and that’s pretty much it. Remember this past May when ESPN banged us over the head with Landon Donovan being cut from the U.S. National Team coverage for a week? And then remember how the WWL subjected us to his horrible analyst and TV talking head work during the World Cup?
In other words, ESPN FC will be probably be nothing but Landon Donovan, Landon Donovan and more Landon Donovan tonight.
You’ve been warned.
The all-time leader in both goals and assists in MLS history is hanging them up. Which is kind of like Crash Davis at the end of Bull Durham when he retires. He was the all time career home run record holder. Which is akin to being the greatest scorer in MLS history.
