Move over Alexandre Lacazette, because Arsenal have reportedly broken the club transfer fee record again. Multiple outlets (including the Daily Telegraph) are reporting that a £60 (€65, $77.9) million deal between the north London side and Borussia Dortmund has been agreed, which would then make Aubameyang the most expensive signing in Gunners’ history, once the deal finalizes.
Until it’s official, the record still belongs to Lacazette, who came over for £46.5 million this past summer.
The Guardian states that: “The Gabon international has agreed a contract to 2021 believed to be worth around £180,000 a week, which would make him the highest-paid player at the Emirates Stadium.”
Multiple reports in the UK suggest that the deal has been agreed upon in principle, and will be sanctioned by Dortmund once they find a replacement striker.
That’s where the fun begins. In what has already been a very contentious transfer saga between the two clubs, more drama is on the way. If you think it’s been an action packed January transfer window (it certainly has), more transactions are set to take place between now and deadline day as at least a couple more dominoes will fall.
For that replacement Dortmund want, it’s reportedly Olivier Giroud or Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi, and then we have a potential chain reaction occurring.
It’s best summated by this tweet from David Ornstein of the BBC:
Merry-go-round: Giroud was lined up to replace Aubameyang at Dortmund then got offer from Chelsea & was keen, so Dortmund turned to Batshuayi. But Chelsea baulked at Giroud fee so discussed Batshuayi/Llorente swap with Spurs, which nobody agreed on. Deadlock #AFC #BVB #CFC THFC pic.twitter.com/HA6ymZ6IiN
