Representative Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Tennessee, claims he wasn’t actually flirting with singer Cyndi Lauper earlier this week when he tweeted to her that he: “couldn’t believe how hot” she was.
Here’s where I would embed Cohen’s 140-character-or-less pass at Cyndi Lauper, but it was deleted 21 minutes after it was posted. Cyndi Lauper was used as a pawn to obtain publicity for a PBS documentary airing next week about the music scene in Memphis. And I guess I’m taking the bait right now, since I’m now posting about this.
Memphis (speaking of Memphis musicians mixing with politicians, check out President Barack Obama rocking out to Justin Timberlake at the White House) is the city Cohen represents in Congress.
Cohen tweeted to Cyndi Lauper: “great night, couldn’t believe how hot u were. See you again next Tuesday. Try a little tenderness”
Cyndi Lauper, famous for `80s hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time after Time” and “True Colors,” recorded her most recent album, “Memphis Blues,” in Memphis. She is featured in the PBS film. The married singer had no idea Cohen was going to tweet anything, the congressman said. “I may write her a letter” to explain, he said.
Cohen’s tweet came after he and Cyndi Lauper attended a Memphis-themed event Tuesday at the White House.
The single-and-ready-to-mingle Cohen said he he’d already decided to tweet something before the event, telling a couple of colleagues that he was “going to have some fun” with the press.
Oh you wascally little guy! Going to have some shenanigans at our expense!
You never know what ballyhoo that Steve Cohen will pull on the media! He’s kinda cray-cray! At a news conference Friday, he said he viewed his tweet to Cyndi Lauper as a trick on the press and good publicity for his city.
“My constituents want the world to come to Memphis and listen to our music,” Cohen said with a laugh
