Tommy Armstrong, Nebraska Run Over Northwestern Very Ho Hum

Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Tommy Armstrong continues cementing his position as the school’s greatest statistical quarterback ever. He’s re-writing the University of Nebraska offensive record book. He threw for 246 yards tonight, in a 24-13 win at Northwestern, increasing his career total to 7,622 yards. Entering the game, he had already broken the previous record of 7,258 yards held by Taylor Martinez.

He also added 132 yards rushing tonight, giving his 378 of total offense for the evening. He’s now just 1,023 yards of total offense away from breaking the school record currently, also held by Martinez (10,233). Expect Tommy Armstrong to reach those marks by late October, early November.

“We made him look like an All-American candidate. He had a great game,” Northwestern Coach Pat Fitzgerald said.

The contest was nowhere near as close as the final score might have indicated. Tommy Armstrong and company ran all over Northwestern in a rather ho hum fashion. They out-rushed the Cats 310-137 and out-gained them 556-388.

The main reason the score held as tight as deep into the game as it did was because Nebraska fumbled twice in the Northwestern end zone.  Yes, they drove all the way down to the goal line twice, only to fumble the ball away and have the Wildcats recover for a touch back.

However, Nebraska just kept running the ball down their throats, and eventually rolled up the rushing yards in a manner that just seemed kind of easy and casual. It wasn’t just Tommy Armstrong, it was Terrell Newby (10 carries for 69 yards and a TD). Devine Ozigbo (13 carries for 41 yards) and Mikale Wilbon (6 carries for 55 yards).

It was very strange, almost ironic to hear the stadium public address announcer consistently refer to a Wilbon as running all over Northwestern.

Pardon the interruption of the Tommy Armstrong discussion.

“He’s a good player,” Northwestern Outside Linebacker Jaylen Prater said of the Nebraska QB.

“He plays hard, I don’t think we did too bad of a job trying to contain him. I think a lot of it was just self-inflicted wounds.”
