Officially, it’s still a wide open three horse race to become Northwestern‘s starting quarterback, but I’m pretty confident that Clayton Thorson will win the job. I’ve come to this conclusion in the same manner that one solves a geometric proof. Because of A you have B, and then B precludes C, and then C leads to D etc.
We’ve profiled this in depth here. With NU Media Day yesterday, we spoke with all three of the Northwestern QB1 candidates, and the podcasts of our exclusive conversations are published in this series.
What Northwestern Coach Pat Fitzgerald said yesterday about when we’ll know who the starting quarterback is:
“If I can make that announcement publicly, I will. I think that’s good for the quarterback, I think that’s good for the team. But if it rolls through a date that we’ve set, then maybe there’s a competitive advantage if I don’t, so I reserve the right to keep any competitive advantage I can.”
Fitzgerald might announce the decision publicly at a press availability. However, that’s only going to happen if he makes his decision shortly. If Fitz doesn’t make the call until very late in the preseason, then he may be decide to not announce it publicly before the season opener. We may have to wait until the Stanford game, to get our answer.
