Austin Carr is a lot more than just Northwestern’s top wide receiver; with a famous athlete name. He’s a singer, pianist, actor, philosopher and student at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management; one of the nation’s best MBA programs.
Carr is not to be confused with “Mr. Cavalier” Austin Carr, 1971’s #1 overall NBA Draft pick out of Notre Dame, who had his #34 retired by the Cleveland Cavaliers following a prolific NBA career.
This Austin Carr is one of four Northwestern football players selected as captain this season (Linebacker Anthony Walker, Cornerback Matthew Harris and OL Connor Mahoney are the three others) had a big breakout game Saturday night as Northwestern beat Duke 24-13.
Austin Carr almost got his head taken off by Duke’s Deondre Singleton, who struck him illegally in the helmet area. Singleton was called for targeting and ejected. Carr, displaying extreme toughness and resiliency, got right back up and kept playing. Carr hauled in a 58 yard touchdown reception from Clayton Thorson, and finished with six catches for 135 yards on the day.
In this contest, the Wildcats first win of the season, Northwestern showed us something that we haven’t seen this season, nor all of last season- a legitimate passing attack. Thorson finished under 50% passing, but he threw for 320 yards. His previous career high was just 256.
In Carr, Thorson has now found a true go-to receiver, something this team has been lacking for quite a while.
Carr lists his tip three favorite singers as John Legend, Michael Buple and Anthony Davis as his top three
“The closest I’ve ever been to John Legend you can find on YouTube, my freshman year, I won the student-athlete talent show, and I sang a John Legend song “Ordinary People,” check it out.”
We did. Here it is below:
Carr has already graduated; with philosophy as his major and business institutions programs as his minor. He is now currently enrolled at Kellogg, and speaking as a former “J.V.” of a one-time Kellogg student, it’s a nice life. At Kellogg, J.V. stands for joint venture, not junior varsity, and it’s just another word for significant other.
My J.V. essentially gave me a chance to live the Kellogg life for a time (without the $110,000 student debt though! That’s the most important thing) as she took me to almost all of the fun leisure events. As Carr is just starting out at Kellogg, I explained to him what the term J.V. means at the school, and after the interview concluded, he introduced me to his J.V. a Northwestern women’s soccer player.
Our exclusive interview with Carr was conducted on meet the team night, and the audio file is below. Austin Carr is a very interesting guy, and there’s so much more to him, his interests and his hobbies than we can possibly write up here… without this becoming a 2,500 article.
Likewise with the interview. Transcribing all of the interesting things that he had to say during our conversation would take up my entire weekend. Thus I invite you to have a listen here:

If Anthony Walker is The Franchise and Justin Jackson The Bread and Butter, then Austin Carr is The Renaissance Man
