Yesterday, Northwestern football was saying though their social media that they had a big announcement coming the next day. Sometimes when they do this, or a lot of college and pro teams for that matter, it’s all drum roll and no cymbal. Teams say they have news which is notable, but in the world the SIDs/Media Relations people live in seems a lot bigger than it really is.

However, this is announcement is definitely newsworthy. This Northwestern football news item is worthy of its own post; not just an item in a notebook. It’s feature worthy, more than just a passing mention.

See the new helmet.

This morning Northwestern Football unveiled a new white helmet that the team will wear in the August 31 opener at California (9:30pm CDT, ESPN2) with this video: (See this is something cool, not a kickoff time announcement or something like that)

Northwestern football last donned white helmets in 1980, and has never worn a while helmet with the now-familiar Block-N logo. That was introduced on the purple Northwestern football helmet in 1981.
