In the early days of this website, we used to talk some SIU Salukis basketball every now and then. Remember when SIU was making the NCAA Tournament every year, the Sweet Sixteen every once in awhile and dominating the Missouri Valley Conference? It wasn’t that long ago, really. Southern Illinois is known as “Floor Burn U.” and account of the way they play defense. SIU was even featured in the paper of record, the New York Times a few years ago.
Now, they’re extremely obscure. No one covers them because no one cares. Until last night. When the SIU Coach (who is it these days? I don’t even know. After Bruce Weber and Matt Painter the wheels fell off under Chris Lowery and the program is a shell of what it once was) It’s Barry Hinson actually.
And Barry Hinson is a GREAT SOUNDBITE. Even before this epic rant took off. SIU Coach Barry Hinson is just….well watch below, he had an angry and hilarious response to SIU losing to Murray State.
And here’s some excerpts from the SIU rant
1:18 -“I’ve been telling my wife this for years, size doesn’t matter.”
2:25- “Our guards are awful. Our three starting guards had one assist and seven turnovers. They must think it’s a tax credit. IT’S UNBELIEVABLE HOW OUR STARTING GUARDS PLAYED. ”
2:50- “My wife…MY WIFE…can score more than two buckets on 11 shots because I KNOW my wife will AT LEAST SHOT FAKE one time.”
3:20- Players and Puppy’s
3:50- “There was a sniper in the gym. Didn’t you see that? We had guys falling down. We had a guy snipered at half-court. Two guys snipered at half-court. It was unbelievable. I would’ve thought Navy Seal Team 6 was out there.”
