timo werner

Chelsea FC are still looking for their first transaction for the January transfer window, but the rumor mill is decisively and understandably working overdrive right now. The west London club have had their transfer ban lifted after just one window, and that means they should be really busy this month.

Here are a few of the Blues transfer narratives gaining traction in cyberspace right now. Multiple outlets have picked up on Chelsea’s pursuit of Lyon striker Moussa Dembele. It’s pretty easy to size this one up, right? Well, games are played on the pitch, not on paper. Said City manager Pep Guardiola in reference to Aston Villa: “We have to play all the teams. Sometimes they’re at the top, sometimes in the middle, sometimes at the bottom. It’s a historic club. They changed their last set-up in the last game. We’ll try to maintain the dynamic we have.”

Man City at Aston Villa Team News: Ederson, Laporte, Kodija, Targett

“It’s been a long December,” as Counting Crows would say, for Aston Villa and January is not off to a good start either. Aside from the 5-0 EFL Cup throttling of Liverpool’s youth team, AVFC have just two victories (Norwich City, Burnley) over that period of time.

Now Dean Smith‘s side welcomes in reigning domestic treble holders Manchester City, who can certainly run up the score with the best of them, when motivated, and on their game. Of course, City have had some head scratching results (Norwich City) this season too, so anything can happen. It’s not good for the hosts that they are so injury riddled right now while City is starting to get fitter.

Kevin De Bruyne Says City Routed United Last Night with Minimal Training

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne added insult to injury last night by opening up on just how little preparation his side put in ahead of their 3-1 dispatching of arch-rivals Manchester United in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie last night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called the first half of football, in which his side conceded three times to Manchester City, and didn’t score, the worst half that his side has put forth this season. De Bruyne said that his team, which scored three times in the first 22 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory in the Old Trafford leg, accomplished it with just 15 minutes of training on Tuesday and not training with the tactical change at all on Monday.

Manchester City Starting XI Prediction vs United (EFL Cup Semifinal)

One could easily call the Manchester Derby EFL Cup semifinal tie the true championship round of the competition. Since 2014, only one title (Chelsea in 2015) has been claimed by a non-Manchester club. While some doubt the seriousness or worthiness of this competition, the big boys, who operate at an elite level financially, obviously seem to take this tournament seriously.

City have won the last two and four of the last six. Their top priority this season is the UEFA Champions League, but Pep Guardiola’s side will play this match to win too. However, don’t expect Guardiola to field his strongest side here.
