Chicago Cubs draft kid from Princeton! Sideshow Bob upset

The Chicago Cubs took some kid from Princeton University in the 30th round of the MLB Draft yesterday. I didn’t even know Princeton had a baseball team. And I guess they’re relevant? We all know that Princeton alums rule the universe. Much to chagrin of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. (see video below) They win at life; not on the baseball diamond. Princeton is also the setting for the greatest novel in history: This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Yesterday was another big day for Princeton as the Cubs draft sheet showed this:

30 (888) Zak Hermans RHP Princeton University (NJ) 6/21/91 R R 6-2 190

The last Princeton sports product to come into the Chicago didn’t do so well. Northwestern coach Bill Carmody and Princteon offense did not get the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament.

The Cubs completed the Draft with 40 selections during the three-day event.

In the 15th round, the Cubs selected right-handed pitcher Michael Wagner out of the University of San Diego. A teammate of Cubs first-round pick Kris Bryant, Wagner struck out 84 batters in 89.0 innings, good for an average of 8.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, while walking 32.

The Cubs 25th round selection, outfielder Marcus Doi from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii, is the first player from Hawaii selected by the Cubs in the First-Year Player Draft since shortstop Jan Thornton-Murray, taken in the 14th round of the 1999 draft.

Overall, the Cubs selected 19 pitchers (16 righthanders and three lefthanders), seven infielders, eight outfielders and six catchers. Additionally, the Cubs selected 22 college players, seven junior college players and 11 high school players.
