Lookout Big 12, those of you who still remain for Seth Doege and the Texas Tech offense. The Red Raiders have been a well-oiled pass-happy machine for years, but yesterday’s 59-13 rout at New Mexico was a special show.
Doege broke the NCAA completion percentage record for quarterbacks who complete at least 40 passes. He connected on 40 of 44 attempts (90.9 percent) to overtake former Red Raider Kliff Kingsbury’s previous mark of 49 for 59 (83 percent).
Doege accomplished this in three quarters before giving way for second-stringer Jacob Karam.
“It’s a tribute to the entire offense,” said Doege.
“There were balls that should have probably been incompletions that receivers caught, and the offensive line played really well — I think I got hit one time and it was because I missed the assignment and called the protection wrong.”
Doege finished the contest with 401 passing yards (about ten yards per completion/attempt) 5 TDs, 0 INTs.
The one caveat to his insane numbers is that game against the New Mexico Lobos- the joke of FBS college football. There are many FCS team that could annihilate NM and their hilariously bad defense. Since Mike Locksley left the Illini offensive coordinator position to become the Lobos Head Coach in 2008, the team has gone 2-24.
He probably won’t last the full season; but at least he was a part of history yesterday.
