Kirk Ferentz’s son a Candidate for Nation’s Best Collegiate Center Award

Usually, the coach’s son is a player who’s often subject to ridicule on his team. Of course, he’s often also very good, and fundamentally sound. University of Iowa junior center James Ferentz, yes son of Hawkeyes Coach Kirk Ferentz, has been named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List.  The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I college football.

And as we all know, Hawkeyes football in the Ferentz era has produced a ton of good offensive linemen.

Perhaps only the Wisconsin Badgers are better than Iowa- league wise- in producing great offensive linemen. Ferentz (6-2, 284) started all 13 games for the Hawkeyes in 2010, earning the offensive Coaches Appreciation Award. And like plenty of other Hawkeyes lately, he’s had his run-in with the law- over you guessed it, a controlled substance

He played every offensive play in 10 of 12 games during the 2010 season, helping Iowa close the season with a dominating rushing performance in the 27-24 Insight Bowl win, which nobody saw coming, over 12th-ranked Missouri.

The former Iowa City HS prep is one of 42 candidates on the Rimington list; includes six players from both the Big Ten and Southeastern conferences. The award is named after former Nebraska center Dave Rimington.
