White Sox Sign Adam Dunn, 4 Years $56 Million

According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, a four-year deal for “a bit less” than $60 million over four-years is basically complete between the Chicago White Sox and Adam Dunn.

Other sources are saying the specific number is $56 million. So once again, Sox GM Kenny Williams has landed one of the biggest free agents in Major League Baseball. And eventually gotten the man he wanted. (Believe me, someday you’ll inevitably see Chone Figgins in Sox pinstripes) And with the Sox not offering a contract to closer Bobby Jenks, they still have designs on keeping Paul Konerko.

Dunn is a career .250 hitter with 354 homers in 1448 games. He has spent his entire career in the National League playing eight years in Cincinnati and one in Arizona. He signed with Washington as a free agent in 2009. The thing about Dunn is that he does strike out a ton. Last year he struck out 199 times in 558 at bats while hitting 38 homers. He also drove in 103 runs in 158 games for the Nationals.

It should be fun to watch the mid-summer games on Chicago’s South Side as the ball tends to fly out of New Comiskey Park in the heat and humidity. Especially so since they re-did the upper deck in anticipation of the 2003 All-Star Game, and the process dramatically changed the air currents to the benefit of hitters.

Dunn came up with the Reds, being drafted in the second round of the 1998 draft out of high school in Texas. For fans in the midwest he played twice in the Midwest League. In 1999 he played for Rockford, hitting .307 with 11 homers. In 2000 he played with Dayton, hitting .281 with 16 homers.

In other White Sox transaction news today:

The Chicago White Sox have exercised the 2011 club option on the contract of Alexei Ramirez, avoiding arbitration with the Silver Slugger Award-winning shortstop, who had opted out of the final year of the deal he signed on January 22, 2008.  Under terms of the contract, Ramirez will earn a base salary of $2.75 million in 2011.

Ramirez, 29, hit .282 (165-585) with 29 doubles, 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 156 games with the Sox last season to become the first shortstop in White Sox history to win the Silver Slugger Award.  He led all AL shortstops in average, slugging percentage (.431), home runs and total bases (252), ranked second in RBI, third in hits and tied for third in doubles.
