NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins was in town this weekend attending the American Diabetes Association’s Chicago EXPO to help show Chicagoans how to be healthy, active, and live well with diabetes.

Wilkins was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes shortly after he retired from the NBA at the age of 40. Because of his family history, Dominique’s grandfather and father both died from the disease, he decided to do everything he could to better manage his diabetes and encourage others to do the same.

The “Human highlight film” and 1986 NBA scoring champion spoke with us about everything he’s doing these days (as you can see the Atlanta Hawks erected a statue of Dominique Wilkins outside their home arena.

Wilkins is working extensively with the his Diabetes Dream Team, a national initiative launched in partnership with Novo Nordisk to help adults with type 2 diabetes customize an approach to managing the everyday challenges of the diabetes.

We discussed that as well as his thoughts on the upcoming NBA postseason in our exclusive conversation posted below.

Nique’s step son, Isiah Wilkins, figures to start at Virginia next season, so we touched on that topic a bit as well as the Golden State Warriors making a run at history.

We also asked him his thoughts on the direction that the Chicago Bulls should go this offseason. We’ll be transcribing that and posting it here tomorrow morning.
