Captain of both Manchester United and the England National Team Wayne Rooney tied Sir Bobby Charlton two days ago for the English scoring record. Rooney is now level with Charlton at 49 goals as England beat San Marino 6-0. The Three Lions became the first team to qualify for Euro 2016.

Tonight he broke England’s goal-scoring record versus Switzerland. Here’s the footage of goal number 50

Rooney told ITV Sport tonight after the game: “It’s a dream come true and a huge honor. Hopefully now it’s done I can kick on from here and concentrate on the team and with success in the future.”

He added: “It was a big moment for me. I picked my corner and put my boot through it and got as much power as possible and the keeper got a touch but luckily it had enough power. It’s right up there, if not the best. To be a country’s leading scorer before the age of 30, I’m extremely proud. I went through a spell around 2008 when I didn’t score for England but since Roy (Hodgson) has come in I’ve scored quite a few and I’m grateful to him.”

Rooney accomplished the feat on a free kick at the national stadium. It made the perfect backdrop for a very special moment. This will be the lead story today for fans of global football all across the world.
