Antonio Conte Unsure of Diego Costa’s Long Term Future at Chelsea

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been the subject of many a transfer rumor. There have been multiple reports that Costa is unhappy at Chelsea, and looking for the exit door, with a potential return to Atletico Madrid in the cards.  Costa has three more years left on his current contract and a move back to Madrid could be complicated, and expensive, perhaps costing £40 million.

Back on July 19th, Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte dismissed the likelihood of Costa leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.

Today however, was a little bit of a different story.

Conte didn’t exactly put to rest speculation that Diego Costa could be on the move saying: “I speak for today, and today Costa is a Chelsea player. Tomorrow, if you ask me will he remain with us, I don’t know.”

Contrast that with what Conte said on July 19th:

“Diego Costa is our player, he’s a fantastic player with fundamental importance. He’s very happy and is working hard.”

Conte also said that Costa didn’t play today, in a 3-2 loss to Real Madrid (more on that here) because he is injured, but he striker may see the field against AC Milan in Minneapolis if his fitness improves.

Stay tuned, because perhaps the Spanish international could still be on the trading block this month.
