Michigan State Senior Guard Bryn Forbes is probably the best pure shooter in college basketball this season. Many in the media have called him the college equivalent of the Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry; or Klay Thompson.
Being called the Splash Brother of college hoops is indeed superlative praise, and it makes him certainly one of the most exciting players to watch this month.
“Bryn Curry,” joked Forbes’ teammate Matt Costello when asked about the hyperbolic analogy.
Forbes took the high compliment graciously and made a very grounded remark.
“I don’t know if I’m that the good. But it’s just nice to be mentioned in the same breath as those two. They’re very talented, best shooters in the world.,” said Forbes.
Right now, the Golden State Warriors are America’s sweethearts. Sports fans everywhere enjoy watching the elite greatness that is Golden State. They’re especially huge with the high school and college demographics too. Most college basketball players look up to Curry, and Bryn Forbes is no exception.
“I’m a fan of them absolutely,” he said.
Forbes is definitely one of the players to watch as we now get excited for college basketball’s postseason. Get in on the excitement with a free poster-size bracket in-store at Staples beginning today Monday, March 14 through March 16.
College basketball enthusiasts can stop by a Staples store to get a Free 2¹ by 3¹ Bracket Poster (and additional special discounts) with the first round teams pre-populated in bracket formation. On ESPN’s Bracketology selection show last night, half of the four analysts (Dick Vitale and Seth Greenberg) picked MSU to win it all. Vitale originally made the Spartans his selection on a media conference call last Thursday.

Forbes’ stellar senior season has really been a pleasant surprise (.492 FG%, .493 3-PT FG%). His development and ascension has surprised even Coach Tom Izzo.
“Yeah, it has. It really has,” he said.
“It helped because Zel and Carlton Valentine, his dad, coached him. Kept telling me Bryn Forbes is maybe the greatest pleaser I’ve ever had. That kid came in this morning early. “Coach, can I watch film with you?” He always wants to learn. He, too, is a very good student and an incredible kid.”
“I think he’s got some basketball ahead of him. He’s getting better. This was a good sign that he struggled and kept playing. Not that I kept playing him. He kept playing. That was a good sign for him for now, for the immediate feature, and for the long-term future.”
Forbes previous career highs for 3-PT% were .427 and .447 for FG%.
When Izzo said right there that Forbes has “a lot of basketball in front of him,” he’s clearly referring to Forbes’ NBA Draft stock, which was not even on the map until this season. In 2016 though, his stock has taken off like a rocket ship.
Forbes and MSU will take on Middle Tennessee State in the first round Friday in the afternoon on CBS. For the full list of tip times, channel assignments and announcer pairings go here. You already know that at Michigan State, the only thing that matters is the postseason. You already know that in East Lansing, the season doesn’t really begin until March.
Be sure to keep an eye on Bryn Forbes; especially when he’s got the ball behind the three-point-line. He may just develop into the next Splash brother one day.
