Bryan Robson, Manchester United Football Club Ambassador, thinks the club reputation will really take a hit if they fail to win a single trophy this season.
“Captain Marvel,” one of the biggest icons in United history, thinks under fire manager Louis van Gaal cannot fail, because if he does, it would be very bad for the brand.
“I think he needs to win something, or at least get United into Europe, that’s the least we have to look at,” Robson said at the launch of United’s partnership with Gulf Oil International.
“Otherwise, it’s a huge blow to the club’s prestige.”
“With Arsenal going out of the FA Cup, if I were manager of this club I would look at that now and think this is really do-able, we can win this trophy and we have to get the lads to believe that.”
“Winning the FA Cup would be a huge boost to some of the squad who have never won a trophy with United, it would give them great self-belief which has been lacking a little this season. We won it in 1990, won the Cup Winners’ Cup the next year and the title two years after that.”
The name Bryan Robson is right up there with Sir Bobby Charlton, Roy “Keano” Keane, Sir Alex Ferguson, Paul “Scholesy” Scholes and David Beckham in the Man United pantheon. Back when the club had major struggles under David Moyes, he spoke about what rough times those were.
“Everybody knew it was going to be a difficult job for whichever Manager came in after Sir Alex’s success,” Bryan Robson said.
“It’s a transitional period for our club at the moment and for David Moyes. And for the techniques as they have to get used to what David is trying to put over to the players.”
Robson also spoke about the criticism of David Moyes, and offered how the club should handle it. Those lessons can be applied here, as its a little bit of history repeating.
“I think a club like United have proved over the years that don’t do knee jerk reactions and give the manager a chance to prove themselves and I’m sure there is plenty of patience with David and try and support him in every way to try and get that success back.”
